What Is Hair Density
Majority of people have different types of hair. Most of the time, distinctions can come in the form of color, texture, or density. Hair color and texture are popularly known hair attributes, but hair density should be noted as well for anyone to have a full understanding on how to manage and maintain the hair properly.
What is hair density?
Hair density simply means the thickness or volume of the hair. It refers to the actual count of hair strands you have in your head. Although density is numerically determined, hair thickness or volume can be very much subjective when gauged using the eyes. This is because even if hair density or count is lesser, the hair could still project a more voluminous look depending on the type of hair and with proper grooming. A person with a finer hair nature can have more strands compared to another who have a coarser crowning glory.
Hair density can be determined and affected by several factors like genetics, lifestyle, the environment, and including the intake or application of certain medications. Hair experts note that on the average, a mature individual can grow around 2,200 hair strands per square inch. When totaled, that’s around 100,000 hairs on the entire head.
But as mentioned above, hair density can differ in terms of race and hair type. People with blond hair are generally gifted with denser hair with average total hair count from 130,000 to 140,000. Those with natural red hairs on the other hand have lighter densities at around 80,000 to 90,000 strands. The rest of the black and brown hairs stay in between at the average of 100,000.
Hair density and grooming
There are no limitations when it comes to grooming and styling a lightly or heavily dense hair. It will still boil down to the proper choice of hair cut or style that would fit a person’s face, figure, or personality. But if you are observant enough, there are sets of hair styles that would look best for thick hairs or for thinner hairs. For example, layers, straight cuts, bob cuts, etc are suitable for denser or thicker hairs while curls, waves, and the blunder cuts are ideal for thinner hair.
Hair density and hair fall or hair loss
One indicator that an individual suffers from a potential hair problem is the gradual decrease of the hair’s density. The problem usually starts with hair fall and further develops into hair loss or baldness. This concern is common especially for males whose genes are naturally susceptible to hair loss. Hair falling or shedding is natural at a rate of 50 to 100 dead hair strands daily. And after shedding, there should be new sets of hair that would replenish the natural density. Other than genetic tendencies, excess hair fall and density decrease can be attributed to stress, unhealthy lifestyle, or excessive chemical exposure.
Improving hair density
There are several ways on how you could try to increase the density of your hair. It can be naturally, medically, or on plain aesthetics. An example of a natural method of improving hair density is the use of natural hair care products and the observance of a healthier diet aimed at providing nourishment to the hair. On a medical perspective, hair re-growth products can help. And finally, plain aesthetic grooming and styling can be an instant solution. Wigs and extensions are part of the solutions.
