How to Wash and Condition African American Hair
The Best Way to Wash and Condition Black Hair
There is so much advice one can find on how to wash and condition Black hair. If you take heed to all of the advice out there, you will be one busy yet frustrated lady! My advice is very simple, yet effective (I’ve been doing it for years and it works)… so read on.
To have healthy hair, you need to have clean hair. Some people say it is not wise to shampoo and condition your hair daily, some says it is okay. Actually, the number of times you need to wash, shampoo, and condition your hair will solely depend on you. Nobody knows your hair better than you do.
Black hair is naturally dry and brittle. You need a shampoo that will keep your hair moisturized, get a shampoo with a conditioning effect. If you enjoy a bubble bath, leave the washing routine of your hair in the shower. This will help in avoiding tangles as the running water from the shower helps smooth the hair down. Just as much as you would want to rinse your hair thoroughly after shampoo, do the same before you apply shampoo. Make sure that the whole area of your hair is soaked. With a minimal amount of shampoo, lather the top of your head while gently massaging your scalp. Do not put too much shampoo on the tips of your hair as this will cause it to dry.
Conditioning is of utmost importance. In fact, it is better to condition your hair more times than you shampoo. If you shampoo your hair twice a week, then you should be conditioning four times a week. Use a conditioner that is specially made for dry hair. After you have rinsed off the shampoo, apply a generous amount of conditioner on the entire hair area and cover it with a shower cap. Dry it under a hooded dryer or simply let it set for 30 minutes before rinsing off.
Rinse shampoo and conditioner off thoroughly as to avoid residue buildup. Gently squeeze your hair with a towel, never rub. Apply a natural light oil to wet hair and comb it with a wide-tooth comb.
That’s it. See, I told you it was simple.
