10 Products That Work for Type 4 Hair
1. Shea Butter – heavy butter for sealing in moisture, softens hair
2. Aloe Vera Gel (AVG) – for hold, natural moisturizer, promotes growth
3. Extra Virgin Coconut Oil (EVCO) - makes hair manageable, seals in moisture, pre-poo
4. Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO) – prepoo, sealant, carrier oil/mixes well w/other oils
5. Castor Oil – thickens hair naturally, sealant
6. Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) – balances porosity, cleanses scalp, curl definition
7. VO5 Moisture Milks or Suave Naturals Conditioner – cowash conditioner, cleanses w/o stripping hair
8. Henna – natural thickener, strengthener, dye/colorant
9. Dr. Bronner’s Castile Soap – Natural cleanser, sulfate free, eliminates build up, not taxing to the strands, oil based formula
10. ApHogee Keratin & Green Tea Restructurizer - restores protein into the hair shaft, heat protectant, pH balanced, porosity control
These are the absolute essentials that I keep in my arsenal. They are in no particular order. Other products vary – the DC and protein treatments of my choice. As you can see, I focus on natural products that do the trick better than most synthetically constructed products. Try these out and see if you get some of the same benefits as I have listed above. Most can’t go wrong with them, unless you happen to have an allergic reaction to some of the oils and/or products. Most of them have multiple uses – which I love! Hope this helps!

I like shea butter a lot. Last year I was introduced to shea butter oil and I love it. It’s nice and thick, sorta like castor oil but it seems a little more nourishing. For daily use, I apply Gleau Nourishing Oil blend. It’s 8 different oils rolled in one. It’s light and adds a great shine.
I also love ACV as a final rinse. It works wonders on my itchy scalp. I’ve got my eye on the Aphogee Green Tea reconstructor. That would be a great addition of my regimen.

Hi Roxanne,
Try the Vitamin Shoppe or some local health food and/or drug stores. Search the net, you can also buy from the web if you like!

Hi Autumn,
There is a post on here about finding your hair type. Look under natural hair care or all natural tag. It is basically your coarser, coily, springy, afro-textured hair.

So I have locks, and they started to break off in the front at the half. But they are very long in the back, and have not broken off. So basically the hair in the front is half the length as the locks in the back, giving me a dredlock mullet I guess. I only wear my hair in a ponytail because of this. I have no idea why this happened. I never took much care of my hair before it happened, but now im on a quest to keep it in good condition. I used Extra Virgin Olive Oil, but nothing else. Can anyone tell me why they break off, and what can I use to make them grow faster, and prevent this from ever happening again..

I recently went natural and I tried a couple of products my cousin came across. “Hair Basics”. The conditioner is literally hair crack and the scalp balm worked well in the spots where I had perm issuses. Hadn’t been able to find it in stores. Has anyone else heard of it?

I use KUZ revitalizing cream treatment for my natural hair as a leave-in treatment, then I apply their shine drops as a finishing aid. My sis uses these products too and loves them. My sis found free samples on the following site: kapelly.com. highly recommended

Hello, I’ve been natural for about 10 months and everything has been going fine until recently. I’m experiencing some breakage in the back of my head on one side and I’m not sure why. Does anyone have any idea what to use to stop it. I’m sad about it!!! lol!
