Meet LaToya, one of our faithful contributors over at the bhp forum. She took the time out to have a quick conversation with us about wigs, protective styling, and her relaxed hair. Hopefully you all can receive some of her wonderful tips and tricks about protective styling.
What are your favorite protective styles?
Half wigs, phony ponies, bantu knot outs, and buns.
Have you seen considerable growth or retention as a result of protective styles?
Yes, I’ve noticed growth and retention. I have less split ends because my hair isn’t down rubbing on my shoulders and clothes.
How do you choose your wigs?
I’m addicted to hairsister.com. I go there to search for cute wigs and to look at pictures of real women wearing them. The models don’t do the wigs justice, in my opinion.
What would you say to the ladies that may be considering wearing wigs, but are apprehensive?
At first I was apprehensive because I thought wigs were for old ladies and it would look “wiggy” (lol); but truthfully, they look nice and I get a lot of compliments. Wigs are not just for old ladies. They are much more convenient than getting tracks sewn or glued in. Not to mention, wigs are not as damaging on your hair. Wigs are also very versatile, I love them!
What do you consider the most important element when caring for your relaxed hair?
I would say not over processing hair with frequent relaxers, and not be so scared of protein!! A relaxed head needs more protein!
Do you stretch your relaxers? If so, for how long? What benefits do you gain from it?
Yes, I do stretch relaxers currently I’m almost 11 weeks (10 weeks, 4 days) into a 12 week stretch. I’ve noticed my hair is thickening up from stretching, and the overall health is improving. I like my hair not having that “fresh relaxer” look.
What products do you incorporate into your regimen?
These are my staple products:
V05 Passion Fruit Smoothie – for co-washing
Vitale Hair Mayo – for a light protein treatments
Elasta QP DPR11 and Honey and/or LeKair Cholesterol – as a deep conditioner
Aphogee 2 step – protein a few days before a relaxer
S-Curl and HE LTR – to moisturize
Olive Oil/JBCO/EVCO – to seal
Would you ever consider going natural?
Definitely I would love to go natural.
What advice would you give about protective styling for relaxed ladies?
A lot of relaxed ladies get in the habit of wrapping and unwrapping, you can still achieve cute styles (with protective styling) without that stress on your hair.
