How to Stretch Relaxers

How to stretch relaxers

Jessica T. in Fairfax, VA asked:

What is the best way to stretch my relaxer without losing hair? It seems like when I try to stretch after the fourth week, my hair is shedding.

The best way to successfully stretch your relaxer is to find good oil for softening your new growth. That new growth needs special attention and must stay moisturized in order to keep it in good condition, and to help blend it better with the relaxed hair.  The oil that I use is coconut and extra virgin olive oil. I apply one of these oils daily to keep my new growth looking its best. The demarcation line, the line where natural hair meets with the chemically processed hair, is delicate, so treat it that way. Do not manipulate your hair too much. If you’re combing it constantly or applying heat to it, then yes, you will continue to have shedding. Refer to my blog on Stretching Relaxers Successfully or What Not to do while Stretching. You will find some great tips on stretching. But, don’t forget Jessica, listen to your hair!
