Are sew-in weaves bad for your hair?

1sew-in weavesNo, not ALL sew in weaves are bad; the main thing you have to remember when wearing a weave is to TAKE CARE OF YOUR OWN HAIR!!! Sew in weaves won’t give you freedom from your own hair, but if anything it kind of gives you more reasons to pay attention to your hair. Sew in, just like any other weave, has its ups and downs. They can protect your hair but if not “installed” correctly it can damage or break your hair. If you’re trying to grow your hair out it’s recommended that you install a “full head” of weave (which means none of the clients hair is left out.). Even though this may make it harder to shampoo the crown of the head, it keeps the hair growing at the same rate and it can be used as a protective style. Extracurricular activities such as working out etc may not affect this style as much. When doing a “partial sew in” the crown of the clients hair is left out, then flat ironed or “hot combed” to blend in with the weave and then used to cover the tracks, this gives the client a more natural look. But, this can cause breakage on the client’s hair because you would have to flat iron your hair to keep it blended. And the big thing that comes along with breakage…no growth. So, while the braided hair is growing, the hair at the crown is broken and not growing because of heat damage.

Now for a little Sew in 101; Some FAQs about getting sew ins.

  • 1. How long do they last? It’s recommended that you get a new sew in about every 8 weeks and allow your hair to breathe for a few days. Once you feel the braids getting loose, and starting to hang because of the new growth, get a new install!
  • 2. How do you maintain the hair under the sew in? It’s your hair do it just like you would do your hair if it wasn’t under the weave. You should still wash and condition your hair about every two weeks and dry under a hooded or bonnet dryer. Important note: Make sure your hair is dry before getting from under the dryer; don’t feel the weave to determine if your hair is dry. It’s important that your hair is dry first; it may take longer for your hair to dry because it’s braided and under the weave. If your hair isn’t completely dry then it can cause mildew in your hair because the weave is covering your hair and its not getting any air. Also, remember to dry your hair using the medium setting.
  • 3. What kind of hair should I buy? Honestly, if you’re going to go buy the 12.99 pack of yaki hair that you used back in the day for a ponytail, that’s EXACTLY what you’re going to get. Some 13 dollar quality hair, don’t be surprised if it sheds a lot and tangles. Try buying a more expensive type of hair such as Remy hair. This hair is more expensive but it doesn’t shed as much, hardly won’t tangle and its reusable (if you want to reuse it).
  • 4. How tight should your hair be braided? If it hurts, it’s too tight. Just like with regular braids, braiding too tight causes a strain on your hair. If you feel your stylist braiding your hair too tight, SAY SOMETHING! It’s your hair. (Do the “eyebrow check”, if you raise your eyebrows and you feel the braids pulling at your scalp. You need to call your stylist back. The oil sheen really won’t help this time lol)
  • 5. What kind of products can I use on my weave? You don’t want anything too heavy that will weigh your hair down, you can use the same products you use on your regular hair just don’t get happy and start to get heavy handed. A little goes a long way. Since it’s a weave it won’t respond to products the way your normal hair will, so you won’t have to use a lot.

Tips for getting a sew in include: Knowing your stylist: Especially if you don’t know the stylist who’s about to do your hair, know what you want before you get there. Know the exact cut, how much hair you want in your head, and how tight you want it. (Some stylist may sew the hair in too tight and it can break the hair off, and we’re trying to grow our hair out, we don’t want to damage it.) Don’t let the stylist take advantage of your hair especially if you’re new to getting sew ins, they will tell you anything!!! Some stylist will do anything to make you look good, just so they can get your money. (Trust me I know from experience). Don’t rely on your stylist for everything; learn how to do your own hair. That way you can save money and getting stronger in your journey to healthily hair growth.

So, I don’t think all sew ins are bad. But, you do have to take care of your OWN hair under the weave. Sometimes we get so caught up in the weave and how much we love it, and we begin to think that having a sew in is a free ticket to get out of doing our own hair. When we forget about our hair underneath it causes our hair to become a victim of “Hair Negligence” which results in a bad sew in, breakage, and possibly some hair loss. That’s my time for now, keep it fabulous!!!!

I agree sew-in weaves are not bad for your hair, in fact they really make your hair grow. Its like you have the best of two worlds, you have a hair look and then your hair is cornrowed down and protected with braiding hair.

The only thing that makes people scared of sew-in weaves in my opinon is when removing the weave. Whenever you remove any type of weave or hair extension, you have GOT to use a product like the Take Down Remover to soften/detangle your hair so it will not get broken or damaged when combing through your hair.

It is like having the best of both worlds. My natural hair is longer and healthier than I ever remembered as a child. Before I started wearing weaves 3 years ago, my hair was a little past my shoulders. Now my hair is down to the lower part of my back. It’s great when you wear the best, natural human hair for your weaves because you still look natural and glamorous on the outside , while giving your hair a break. I’ve been using my same hair over and over for the last 3 years. I bought it from Dreamgirls Hair Imports (www.dghair.com) and I must say there’s absolutely nothing better. People don’t know that I have a weave! Even though my natural hair is long, I still rock my weaves, so I won’t damage my real hair. The great thing is that I have options, and option to wear the weave or not. At this point, people can’t tell whether I have my weave in or not. I agree, the least amount of hair out is the best. :-)

  8. Bre says:

Congrats Shakena!!! You scalp is most likely itching because its dry. That happens alot when wearing sew ins. Try washing and doing a deep condition and spraying a little bit of braid spray on the braids making sure to not get it on the hair because it will weigh it down. You can also try using a light oil to put between the braids but again nothing too heavy you don’t want to weigh the hair down…Hope this helps!

    1. How do you take out your sew in. do u clip out the thread or do you use a special “thing” for it?
    2. Is longer weave bad for your hair cause of the weight?.

    Hello Sierra,

I just clip the thread and take my sew ins out but its best to get someone to help to make sure that you don’t cut your own hair. And, long hair is not bad for you because it shouldn’t be that heavy. I’ve never used anything over 8 ounces for my hair and I never had a problem, and I just love love LOVE long hair. I don’t have a problem wearing 20 inches or more lol

Hi, Kimberly!!! I’ve never used Milky Way que hair but it looks like its just regular human hair and not remy hair. Remy hair tends to last longer but you should be able to get 8 weeks out of that hair. Just don’t put too many products or heat on it (don’t take any chances lol). Ask you stylist to seal the wefts so the hair won’t shed as much, or you can seal it yourself I used Got2BGlued and I spray it on the weft (not the hair). But, if you don’t plan on keeping it long then you should be fine. Good luck! If you have any questions feel free to ask!!!

But im 20 and i’ve had a weave at least three times. I had a friend of mine do it 2 out of the three times. Basically my hair decided to break off, not completely but it definitely had to be cut. My last traack was probably two years ago. I want one so bad again i love them so muchh! But my question to you is, should i go ahead and get one done again at a shop or should i not do it at all? I;m not sure if it makes a difference that i have mixed people hair? idkkk HELP PLESE? (:

  16. Bre says:

Hello Adrianna and Thank you! Sorry to hear about your set back ending in having to have your hair cut, I know how frustrating that can be. When I first started getting sew ins, my hair was a bit damaged. Since sew ins are protective styles they can protect your hair and you can retain more length (if you remember to take care of your hair underneath ) especially if you get full sew ins or if you use a closure. This way, none of your hair is left out and you do not have to worry about blending with heat. So yes, if you want a sew in I think you should go to a shop that you trust to get it done. Your type of hair really does not matter but if you are not getting a full sew in then you would want to get a type of hair that blends well with your natural hair. Good luck, and if you need any help then let me know!!! Just remember to keep your hair washed and moisturized underneath your sew in, remember your natural hair is wayyyy more important than the weave.

    Hi Bre,
First off let me say, thank you for being so informative and well educated in your field, your knwoledgeable insight is a Godsend for some one like me. But anywho, my hair is relatively short (about 3 inches at the crown, one inch at the nape and sides) and I would like use a sew in as a protective style to grow it out. My first question is: Is my hair long enough for a full sew in? My second question is: What brand of hair to you recommend, I know you mentioned Remy, but is there a specific brand you would endorse in the $25- 30 price range?

Hi Dreajaye! Yes, as long as your hair can be braided then it is long enough for a sew in! I really can’t recommend any hair for 25-30 dollars but I have friends who use Milky Way for short term, (Although I do not recommend their colored hair, it is processed and it tangles soo bad lol) maybe you can try that. Or look around the BSS and see if they have any remy hair on sale. Good luck let me know if you have any other questions!!! Also, check online for hair, and remember remy hair is best because it can be reused!!!

Should natural hair be braided/cornrowed vertically or horizontally before sewing weave in? Does the direction in which your hair is braided affect the amount of breakage one might get from a sewn-in weave? How about if you choose not to add Kanekelon hair to your own hair for reinforcement of braids?

Hello Jamie R, I don’t know if natural hair is braided any differently, but I do have my stylist add synthethic hair to my braids because my hair used to be really thin in some parts. I do not think the direction of the hair matters as far as breakage, I think it just depends on how you take care of your hair.

To you will be about blow dryer. My blow dryer went out on me so what should I do if I have 2 dry my sclap with the sew in after it is washed n which one is best 2 us 4 the sclap grease or spray? Next ? Is ok I want a sew in that comes a lil past my shoulders, how should I wrap it b 4 going 2 bed? And lastly, is it best 2 relax your hair b 4 you get the sew in or it dosent really matter because I haven’t permed my hair n 3mths.. Oh I’m sorry and how long should it stay in? Well that’s about it I’m really new 1 this whole sew in thing and I see others with sew ins but you could never tell unless they tell you.. Lol n that’s the way I want my hair 2 b.. Thank you for reading as well as answering my questions..

I am so sorry it took me so long to reply! I usually dry my hair half way under the dryer then let the rest air dry and sometimes I have just let it air dry but I didn’t like the results. I never use grease but I have used braid spray and oil just make sure it doesn’t get on the weave because it weighs it down and causes it to tangle!!! Treat it like your own hair, you can sleep in a bonnet, roll it, or just do a regular wrap but make sure that you wear a scarf at night. I keep sew ins no longer than about a month and a half, and you don’t have to relax your hair you can always get a full sew in or a closure. Good luck! I love sew ins and just make sure that you take care of your own hair!!!

hi my hair is really broken off and damage from glue. And I plan on getting a sew in with some hair left outtolook more natural but my hair isn’t very long. It doesn’t go past my shoulders anymore. Does the amount of hair you have affect the way the weave looks? Is the more natural hair the better or will it not matter? I just don’t wantmy hair/weave looking thin.. I want it to look nice and full. Any advice?

Hello Msnicki! Sorry to hear that your hair is damaged, I’ve been there before and I know that its not fun at all. I usually leave out hair if I want to do a high ponytail or something. If you want to leave out your hair its fine as long as the blending is on point! No, the amount of hair does not have anything to do with the hair looking thin, you can use how much you want to make it look full. I use about 6 ounces because I want it too look full but not too much hair so my stylist usually thins it out to about 4 1/2 to 5 ounces. It will not look thin if you stylist knows what she’s doing. If you don’t like it make sure you let them know so they can do what needs to be done to please you. After all, you are paying for it! Try not to flat iron your hair as much so that your hair doesn’t break off and try to stay away from the glue!!!

    Hi

I’ve been getting sew-ins for years now but I have a question regarding my most recent one. I went to a different stylist for the first time because of convenience and I am very disappointed with the results. I asked the stylist to braid my hair in a circle because my hair is long but instead she braided it horizontal and left hair out. I liked it at first because it looked natural but now, 3 days later, I am very upset because she sewed my ends to my cornrolls and I can’t get to my scalp as a result! I’m not used to this and I don’t know what to do. Would you recommend me taking them down? or Can I still wear them and care for my scalp and hair underneath although I can’t even feel my scalp? Your input would be greatly appreciated.

*When getting a sew in should the hairdresser just use my own hair to braid, or should they add extensions?
*Is premium now a good type of hair?
*How long should I keep my weave in to avoid hair damage?

Hello Rachel O, I always have the stylist add extensions because sometimes I think the thread will cause my hair to break off and that’s not a risk I’m willing to take. I have never used Premium Now but I have used other brands of hair by Sennsationel and I was very impressed. To me, beauty supply hair is beauty supply hair and it’s not going to last forever but maybe try searching YouTube or asking someone at your beauty supply store what they recommend. I usually keep my sew ins for about 1 and 1/2 to 2 months…

Also, I just recieved a sew-in and it was super tight the first few days and I was not able to see the stylist again am I not still getting hair growth, because it does eventually loosen up??

I wouldn’t let my hair dry overnight but airdrying is fine too. Have you tried a hooded dryer? That is not direct heat so it shouldn’t damage your hair especially since your hair is braided. It will loosen up but a sew in should never be too tight that its uncomfortable. If its too tight it can pull on your hair too much and then your hair will start to “rip out” and you will lose it.

    Hi everyone,

not sure if my question has been posted already (i hope not that would be embarassing lol :/) I’m from the UK and been growing my hair natrualy from a short mowhawk since last march and started wearing weaves in may. I went to a hairdresser whos really good with full head weaves but for the 1st time I had a weave net on the top of my head making it harder to reach my scalp in the centre of my head.

The day before I had this weave i washed, dried and greased my hair (my own fault I should have probably left it and greased it again in a couple days time), I took this weave out2 days ago and had it in since nov and A LOT of my hair came out when i washed it, my scalp was really SORE with a lot of grease and dry built up between each canrowein my hair (my hair was canrowed back under the net). I KNOW my ends need a trim as I still have a few straight ends from when I used to relax my hair (Been relaxing i for about 10 years) but I have a bald patch about the size of a plum at the top of my head and a slighty read scalp thats starting to scab (signs of healing which is good)….but my hair is still very dry and breaking, but luckily thick so the damage is easy to cover.

Im not sure if im doing the right things or what else I need to do but I’m gettig scared. sorry the message is so long, look forward to your responses girlies.

    thanks again xx

p.s I canrowe/do my hair in big plates for bed and wrap it with a silk scarf at nite and undo the hair during the day and wear as an afro.

OH NO!!!! It sounds like a lot of hair came out. Our hair sheds daily so when its braided there is no where for the hair to fall so yes, when you take the braids out you will see a good bit of hair but never so much that you can compare a bald spot to the size of a plum!!! It sounds like you need to do a protein treatment and maybe the stylist braided it too tight? I would suggest that you start wearing wigs and nursing your hair back to health. Let me know if you need some help about what to do. So sorry this happened, and yes you can braid you hair but make sure you deep condition and use a good moisturizer!

Hello, I have a question about how much hair does it take to do a full head sew in in ounces? I want to order some Indian hair. They say in the beauty supply store the standard amount of hair in a package is 4 ounces. Is it safe to say that anywhere from 6-8 ounces of ordered hair is enough to cover entire head. I am getting a sew in because my hair is thinning and i just want to leave it alone and just try to take care of it and my scalp while wearing the weave. I heard DHT, is a good product to use as well as Biotin vitamin for hair growth..Thanking you for reading..

Hi- loves this website! So informative and really found it helpful. I have very thick full and curly hair! I have recently started adding sew in tracks. I am really tryingto get my hair to gros – it is just above my shoulders. I feel as though when I recently took it out, it was so much shorter. My hairdresser reccommends a full head weave! She thinks will aid my hair growth! I don’t really have the time to look after a full head weave – what do you reccommend! I don’t want to give up length, but I want to make sure that my hair is not only healthy, but grows! THANKS SO MUCH!

Hi Giselle! I love the site, too! It’s the answer to all my hair needs lol About your last sew in, how did you take it out? Did you accidentally cut some of your own hair? How was the hair installed? Did she use a net? Sew ins can be used as a protective style and since a full sew in is a sew in where none of your hair is left out, I can understand why she would suggest that. In my opinion, full head sew ins are easier than partials or sew ins with leave out because you don’t have to worry about blending and you wont have to do much to the hair. I understand you want your hair to be healthy and you want it to grow, but first it needs to get healthy again…then you can work on the length. Make sure you take care of your hair underneath your sew in, if you have any more questions let me know!!!

  35. dawnp says:

Hi, this post has been so helpful to me – thank you! I just got my very first sew-in nearly a week ago. I’m not into the length or any of that. I solely got it to give my own hair a break and grow it out. I really wanted braids, but through the years several stylists and even my doctor have strongly advised against it and said it would break my hair. And my current stylist advised me that a sew-in would be a much healthier alternative, so I did it. Anyway, based on the information you’ve provided, it seems like everything was done right. I was just wondering about 2 things:

    1. Is using a hair net is ok? Because that’s what she used on mine. She said that while it’s not mandatory, she prefers to use a net because it’s just an added another layer of protection to my own hair.

    2. How do you know if your braids are too tight if you’re tenderheaded? I haven’t had my own hair braided to my scalp since I was a little girl, so it was very painful when she braided my hair, but by the time I left the shop it wasn’t hurting anymore. But still, when I raise my eyebrows, I do feel my scalp move. It doesn’t hurt or anything, but it’s like I definitely know my hair is braided underneath. Is that ok?

I totally trust my stylist, but since it is MY hair and since my whole point in getting this weave was to take care and grow out my natural hair, I just want to triple check to make sure I’m not missing anything that I should be concerned about.

And regarding your advice on how to deal with the itchy scalp (b/c mine is itching like CRAZY), as well as washing/conditioning and so forth, is there a how-to video that you can recommend that walks us through the steps? Because I’ve always struggled handling my hair right (even when I follow instructions to a ‘T’ something still goes wrong) and I do not want to mess this up. When I asked my stylist told me that honestly the best thing to do was just come back to her every 2 weeks for a wash and stuff, but money is tight and I just feel like I should be able to do something on my own to care for my own hair in the lean times.

SO sorry for going so long!

Hi. I’m getting my first sew-in tomorrow because we’re having a competition at school and I get to be the model. Sadly, the only hair that was in my price range was this She hair? Anyway, do you know about how long I can expect this to last? Also, I have short, soft hair. I’ve never used scalp grease or anything like that. Can you give me any tips? I’m white, so my hair has the whole soft wavy texture thing going on and I’ve been told the sew in won’t last as long. Is this true? And what products would be ok to use on my scalp and in he weave hair?

I have never heard of “She” hair but if its cost 20 bucks it usually won’t last long. Maybe MAYBE a month? I think the sew in will last, when your stylist braids your base she can always add hair use a net. I would use any products on the weave maybe just a gloss or if you’re gonna use heat on the hair then use a good heat protectant. As far as products to use on your own hair, you should use what ever hair products you would normally use on your hair…

I think its a great idea. I’ve tried Duby hair in my Mom’s hair and all I can say is that is some of the worst hair I have every come across (besides milky way).

So sorry to hear this. What did you do to your hair while it was in the sew in? Did your stylist braid too tight? Maybe you should stretch your relaxer for a while. There are plenty of tips on how to stretch a relaxer on the main forum. Look in the relaxer section or maybe even the hair growth section. http://forum.blackhairplanet.com/f18/

I have an appointment to get a net weave this weekend. I don’t have much experience with weave and this will be my first net weave. I understand the advice about taking care of my own hair, but I’m not sure how to do that while wearing a net weave. How do I wash it? How do I oil my scalp?

Hi, I have a question oh! I love this site!!! Ok..While wearing weave is it true to have weave tighten? Will that damage your hair. I have been wearing weave for years and I only wear it no more then 2 months and I wear it back to back. I have always had THIN Hair but naot this THIN! So I’m wearing wigs for about 6 months, and kinda treating my hair like a Curl, with S-Curl and plastic bag under my wig then going back to the weave. What do you advice?

    Hi Bre

I’ve been having my hair weaved for sometime but only tracks and having the front of my hair out. My hair is now breaking off and i’m guessing this is due to the hair staightners and always putting a relaxer on it.
I have couple of question I would like to ask before I go completely bald!!
First; is it better to have a full weave, that way I won’t have to straighten my real hair?
Second; Please correct me if i’m wrong but does the stands of the weaved hair usually fall out, or is this the way its been sown in?
Third; How should I cover my hair at night?
Fourth; I have never had my hair trimmed ! Should I start doing this before getting a weave put in ?
Fifth; How can you avoid the hair from getting tangled and matted. Every morning when I wake up its like a huge knot!
    BTW I love this site!!!

    Thanks Nay x

i think its bs that they are saying that sew ins are bad for your hair i have been getting them for over two years now and my hair i thicker than ever and also pretty long.

if you want long and thick DO A SEW IN
if you want short DONT DO ONE

Hi! I loved the information on this site because it really helped me to learn more about sewn in weaves.I am 17 and I wear my own natural hair with no relaxers in it. I am black and I have a course texture to my hair. I have never weaved my hair before and I really want to try the sewn ins, however I am scared because when my hair was relaxed I had really bad breakage and had to grow back out my natural hair this required me to cut almost all of my hair. I have been growing back my hair for almost 3 yrs now and it’s above my shoulders but I consider it a pretty good length. I normally braids my hair but I want to try something different like the sewn in weave. After reading all the comments about breakage I am kinda scared to do it now because I have never done it before and i don’t trust any stylists to do my hair because i’m scared they will do it wrong.
I just wanna know more about how to prevent my hair from breaking will the weave is in and the best way to do it and the best way to take out the weave to avoid breakage. Please help..
