Are sew-in weaves bad for your hair?
No, not ALL sew in weaves are bad; the main thing you have to remember when wearing a weave is to TAKE CARE OF YOUR OWN HAIR!!! Sew in weaves won’t give you freedom from your own hair, but if anything it kind of gives you more reasons to pay attention to your hair. Sew in, just like any other weave, has its ups and downs. They can protect your hair but if not “installed” correctly it can damage or break your hair. If you’re trying to grow your hair out it’s recommended that you install a “full head” of weave (which means none of the clients hair is left out.). Even though this may make it harder to shampoo the crown of the head, it keeps the hair growing at the same rate and it can be used as a protective style. Extracurricular activities such as working out etc may not affect this style as much. When doing a “partial sew in” the crown of the clients hair is left out, then flat ironed or “hot combed” to blend in with the weave and then used to cover the tracks, this gives the client a more natural look. But, this can cause breakage on the client’s hair because you would have to flat iron your hair to keep it blended. And the big thing that comes along with breakage…no growth. So, while the braided hair is growing, the hair at the crown is broken and not growing because of heat damage.
Now for a little Sew in 101; Some FAQs about getting sew ins.
- 1. How long do they last? It’s recommended that you get a new sew in about every 8 weeks and allow your hair to breathe for a few days. Once you feel the braids getting loose, and starting to hang because of the new growth, get a new install!
- 2. How do you maintain the hair under the sew in? It’s your hair do it just like you would do your hair if it wasn’t under the weave. You should still wash and condition your hair about every two weeks and dry under a hooded or bonnet dryer. Important note: Make sure your hair is dry before getting from under the dryer; don’t feel the weave to determine if your hair is dry. It’s important that your hair is dry first; it may take longer for your hair to dry because it’s braided and under the weave. If your hair isn’t completely dry then it can cause mildew in your hair because the weave is covering your hair and its not getting any air. Also, remember to dry your hair using the medium setting.
- 3. What kind of hair should I buy? Honestly, if you’re going to go buy the 12.99 pack of yaki hair that you used back in the day for a ponytail, that’s EXACTLY what you’re going to get. Some 13 dollar quality hair, don’t be surprised if it sheds a lot and tangles. Try buying a more expensive type of hair such as Remy hair. This hair is more expensive but it doesn’t shed as much, hardly won’t tangle and its reusable (if you want to reuse it).
- 4. How tight should your hair be braided? If it hurts, it’s too tight. Just like with regular braids, braiding too tight causes a strain on your hair. If you feel your stylist braiding your hair too tight, SAY SOMETHING! It’s your hair. (Do the “eyebrow check”, if you raise your eyebrows and you feel the braids pulling at your scalp. You need to call your stylist back. The oil sheen really won’t help this time lol)
- 5. What kind of products can I use on my weave? You don’t want anything too heavy that will weigh your hair down, you can use the same products you use on your regular hair just don’t get happy and start to get heavy handed. A little goes a long way. Since it’s a weave it won’t respond to products the way your normal hair will, so you won’t have to use a lot.
Tips for getting a sew in include: Knowing your stylist: Especially if you don’t know the stylist who’s about to do your hair, know what you want before you get there. Know the exact cut, how much hair you want in your head, and how tight you want it. (Some stylist may sew the hair in too tight and it can break the hair off, and we’re trying to grow our hair out, we don’t want to damage it.) Don’t let the stylist take advantage of your hair especially if you’re new to getting sew ins, they will tell you anything!!! Some stylist will do anything to make you look good, just so they can get your money. (Trust me I know from experience). Don’t rely on your stylist for everything; learn how to do your own hair. That way you can save money and getting stronger in your journey to healthily hair growth.
So, I don’t think all sew ins are bad. But, you do have to take care of your OWN hair under the weave. Sometimes we get so caught up in the weave and how much we love it, and we begin to think that having a sew in is a free ticket to get out of doing our own hair. When we forget about our hair underneath it causes our hair to become a victim of “Hair Negligence” which results in a bad sew in, breakage, and possibly some hair loss. That’s my time for now, keep it fabulous!!!!

Same!!
I found this (http://21sthair.com/) website and it looks like it would be a good vendor.. They have pretty good reviews and their hair looks really high quality. They’re a bit on the pricey side but I want to get some extensions that can last me a long time and it looks like this website has them.
Anyone else tried this website before?

Lol, smh.
Of course white girls (and other non-blacks) can get weaves too! Ever heard of Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga, Jessica Simpson, JLo, The Kardashians?
You didn’t REALLY think those heads full of thick and beautiful hair was actually “their” hair did you?

You have done a wonderful thing for your God Mother, May God bless you! In my opinion what you did is the only reason for a woman to wear some other woman’s hair. Try some short styles, I think it looks nice on women if it is well done.

Hi I’m Melanie and I’m 15 and I’m really really really scared about getting weave because I’m afraid of the damage it may cause to my hair I just don’t think I would be able to cope if anything happened to my hair and the worst part is the edges of my hair are really thin and even the slightest could damage it and make me bald I really have never really done anything with my hair but relax / platt (platt was ages ago) so my hair edges are just naturally thin but the thing is I really want a change all I ever do is relax ! I saw other comments about taking care of your real hair but how ?? I don’t get it do you like get conditioner then put it in the gaps and wash it of with water and if so wouldn’t it matter if you got the the inside of the weave wet ?? Do you think one weave which is all I will ever do really damage my hair and I really mean 1 if I do this I’m never doing it again its just for the start of school I’m just so scared and the worst part is my mum is totally against it and I have to pay for all the costs and get it done all secretly plus I kinda have to get my hair relaxed and I’m scared that will make things worse I know I’m kinda being ridiculous but I just can’t bear anything happening to my hair ! How can I prevent all these bad stuff from happening because I have a guut feeling its gonna cut my hair up heelp me plzz !!. All this is gonna have to happen next week I just don’t know what to do should I still do it or not !! Plz help me ur a liife saver thank you sorry but also you kniw with the weave does it matter if you get different lengths luke 12 14 10 etc at the same time sorry for all this but im a total newbie with all this thanks xx

Mel a full weave will take stress off your hair mine grew better with it the only problem is that when your edges are braided tight that’s okay it’s just when they sew in the track tight on your edges it will tear it out and bald it. tell your weaver don’t sew the edges so tight tell her anything you have migranes you have sensitive scalp. Otherwise they may not listen most people get weaves or braids edges are very thin or bald that is why.

I’m really really really scared about getting a weave I had in braids before but I kept them in for too long and now I have a giant bald spot in the middle of my head my mom wants to do my weave but shes never done one before I feel more comfortable with her braiding my hair and someone else sewing in the weave is that okay?

Don’t get a weave if your hair is already weak, it will most likely cause permanent baldness. Traction Alopecia is a condition that is from wearing weaves. A lot of black women have to wear weaves now because they are permanently bald! Young lady, please don’t get involved in that out of control vanity it will cost you a life time of baldness. Make the best of what God gave you.

No!!! 8″ will be short you need a 10 to at least have some length, or 12 in if you want it down your back. I’d go with 12″ cuz you can always cut it, but trust if its put in right you will love it and keep all 12 inches. why would you associate with someone who is jealous of you they will try to tear you up and down every chance they get…Keep living baaaaby you’ll learn.

Hi everyone, I need some assistance on my hair, I have a sew in right now and I googled ”how I should take care of my hair underneath a weave”. However, I have the front of my hair out with the sew in. The front, and the back (we’re it cant be braided at) of my hair has broken out from the weaves. My mother suggested that i get a full weave so the front can be out of the way and braided up too. But I dont lie the look of a full weave because it doesn’t fit me. What should I do with the front of my hair to make it grow longer, as well as the back?
If you can help me please e-mail me at sdimanibrown@ymail.com
Thank you.

What you have to do is continue to care for your hair that is not braided. Deep condition it, seal and moisturize it. Remember the hair has to be cared for and just because you have a weave does not mean that the hair is automatically caring for itself. Also take a break from sew ins and give your hair a break from the tension of the sew ins.

Well of course it going to itch lol . Some people can just tolerate it better than others. Also if you get quality hair it should not tangle especially if you comb/ brush it daily.

Since a full sew-in covers your edges, I leave my clients edges out and require that they use the Nioxin scalp treatment twice a day on their edges and it seems to work!

What if you have really bad dandruff? Can you still wear sew Ins? I have to wash my hair just about every 3days because of the scalp issues. Afraid that sew ins wont allow my scalp to breathe.

Thank you for the good information you have given…this is also my first sewin and it is a partial and that is because it does look a little more natural to me. I read some of the ladies comments and one was asking about the Milkyway Q hair…if you plan to keep it in for awhile not a good hair…perhaps you might choose Saga by Mikyway a better choice…also my cosmetologist in Cleveland is really good because as you said before as good as a sewin can be if done wrong it could be harmful…she also said the reaseon why she braids the hair back is because its not quite as much tension on the hair once it starts to grow!!! Thanks again.

(due to my lack of upkeep & all the dye’s) I REALLY WOULD LIKE SHOULDER LENGTH HAIR & AT THIS POINT I AM WILLING TO DO ANYTHING TO GET JUST THAT, BUT HOW? I’M CONSIDERING GETTING EXTENSIONS, BUT I AM A LITTLE BIT EMBARRASSED TO WALK INTO A HAIR SALON & TELL THEM I CAME FOR A WEAVE OR WHATEVER. PLEASE SOMEONE HELP, I AM DESPERATELY CRAVING LONG LUSCIOUS HAIR, ANY SUGGESTIONS ON WHAT I SHOULD DO?

Sometimes using braiding hair to secure your braids can help. it takes the tension off of your hair, sewing a net to the perimeter of the braids and sewing the hair mainly on the net can help also.

Hi, I really want to get a weave in my hair. My hair is well taken care of already. I was told about a quick weave and a full weave (straight or curly; not a braided weave). Which one is healthier for your hair? Which one does less damage to your hair when done the proper way? How much do these costs, based on a range if you know? I want a lot of information if possible before I go to a salon I’ve never been to before in my area (Anaheim-Orange County), and have a bad weave done and all my money get taken for something that wasn’t done right. I’d love and appreciate and email back instead of on this website if you can. Thanks!

I'm not a fan of weave but over the summer I had a sew-in that matted my real hair so bad that I had to cut off 3 inches. My newgrowth was very matted at the roots. So as I was detangling, I was loosing a bunch of hair. I was so upset since my hair was BSL.I kept the sew-in for 8 weeks and treated it as it was my own hair. I washed and deep condition faithfully every week. What did I do wrong?

EVERY ONE ON THIS SITE IS NOT AFRICAN OR MUSLIM…STFU! YOU MUST WANT TO WEAR WEAVE SINCE YOU’RE ON THIS SITE. ITS ABOUT PROTECTING YOUR HAIR. NOT SHAME, ALL DIFFERENT RACES WEAR WEAVE. JOHN TRAVOLTA WEARS A LACE FRONT SEW IN DID YOU KNOW THAT? …ALSO ANCIENT EGYPTIANS WORE WEAVES TO PROTECT THEIR SCALP BECAUSE THEIR HEADS ARE TRADITIONALLY SHAVEN BALD!.
LACK OF KNOWLEDGE SHOWS IGNORANCE.

Hi ok so awhile ago i burned my hair out and i wore my own hair a whole summer vacation and it seemed not to grow, i got my end trimmed and it was still the same length i started taking biotin pills an its growing a little bit now, I hate wearing my real hair because no matter what i do it always have a nappy look to it an its like shoulder length, i love longg hair an im used to it now an without it im like EWW lol i jus recently started wearing full head sew-ins an im waiting to see if it grow with this because i HATE wearing braids and i usually cut my hair an rip it out while removing them. So my questions is how do i take care of my hair underneath the hair sewing net and weave? and after removing the weave is it ok to get perms or will it jus destroy my hair?

The way that you can take care of your hair is to maintain your deep conditioning and moisture. One thing that I do not advise is to get a relaxer after you take the sew in out. You need to wait a while and let your natural hair rest. When you take it out, deep condition and do protein treatments to restore strength.

Thank you for this site, I think I really know what to do now! I have this issue, it started 20yrs ago, I pull my hair out so bad. it’s a horrible habit. The only way my hair will grow is if it’s in braids, where I can’t pull it. These last few months has been the worst. Last August I decided to just wear a very tiny afro, but I still pulled my hair, so I permed it last month, but all the pulling and constant combing has damaged it, so I think I want to go and have my mom’s stylist perm it, and saw-in the hair. The stylist always let me know, I got good hair, I’m just my own hair worst enemy. So Micros did wonders for my hair a couple of years ago, this time, i’ll do saw-in and Micros. I hope they can work with almost 2inches! Maybe i’ll try to wait for one more inch. Some of them are miracle workers.

Black ppl have diff hair from white ppl. We can't wash our hair every day because we need the moisture in our hair where as u all want it out. There's a big diff from our hair and y'all's so washing it every 2 weeks is what we r supposed to do for our type of hair. Not all hair is the same. With mixed children (white and black) u have to see who's genes r stronger when it comes to their hair and that'll tell u how u should take care of it

The crazy part is this woman is saying that you can wash your hair under the weave. No you can't. If you hair is braided underneath your weave then the only way to adequately wash your REAL hair is to take that God awful weave out. If you get you real hair wet underneath your weave there is a good chance you will develop fungus and mildew underneath your beautiful weave of some other woman's hair from China or India. smh!
