Root Awakening by John Frieda Review

Root Awakening Shampoo & Conditioner Review

root awakenI am a product junkie. That means I buy and try almost anything I can get my hands on. That also means that I’ve spent more money than I can guess on products that failed to do anything for my hair. And although I try to use discernment and research my buys, sometimes I am impulsive. One of my recent impulse buys was John Frieda Collection Root Awakening Strength Restoring Shampoo and Conditioner for Breakage-Prone hair. Truthfully, I’ve never even contemplated buying John Frieda products before, since I don’t have naturally curly or coloured hair. So what was different this time? The bright red 2 for 1 sale sign next to the products. If it had been 3 for 1 or even 50% off, I would have bought the detangling spray too, but no such luck.

I have no problem using non-ethnic products, and this one sounded really great. It promised that my hair would be nourished from roots to ends, breakage would be reduced, and that the natural Eucalyptus would stimulate my senses. The only thing that would make it more appealing was if it would take out the garbage and balance my cheque book. Although I’ve already minimized my breakage, I thought this could be used as preventative and help with keeping those things in check. I used a small amount of the shampoo, and massaged it into my scalp as per directions. The smell was outrageously good! Like aromatherapy in my shower. It created a good head of lather (for those who care about that stuff) and had lots of slip. It rinsed well too, leaving no residue on my hair. Neither did my hair feel dried out the way some strengthening/protein shampoos leave it. I was excited to try the conditioner. It was creamy, but light and didn’t just sit on my hair the way I expected it to. The massage helped it to penetrate my hair and scalp, and when I rinsed it out, my hair felt silky. That is not a term I toss around lightly. I’ve often said smooth or sleek, but silk is reserved for when my hair feels so incredible there is no other word to describe it.  It felt so good that I decided to air dry my hair so I wouldn’t have to use extra products like heat protectant, which would only diminish the way my hair felt. I lightly oiled my ends ONLY, combed through, and pinned my hair up. When dry my hair was soft, had movement, and was as smooth as it was wet. I had to use a little oil to amp up the shine, but that is minor.

I know this sounds almost too good to be true, but these products worked and worked well. In fact, the conditioner worked well enough that I didn’t even need the detangling spray. The regular price is a little steep at $10 – $14 Cdn per item, especially since there is only 250 mL (approximately 8 oz) in each tube. BUT you don’t have to use a lot of product to get results, so it can last longer than you might think. If the cost still makes you pause look for it on sale. Just don’t hesitate to snatch them up and incorporate them into your washing regime. Root Awakening is a keeper, and I’m glad I didn’t resist the urge. The only unfortunate thing about this particular impulse purchase is that it has heated up my PJ lust instead of slacking it. Oh well.
