Hi Darlene:

I used to have the same problem a few years ago. I am now currently wearing my hair natural. I have been natural since Feb 2008. I dont mean to sound harsh, but the only way that you will be able to get rid of the dandruff and itching for good is to stop perming/relaxing your hair altogether. I had relaxed hair for about the same amount of time that you did, 20+ years. I would wash my hair sometimes twice a week and still have dandruff and itching. I used dandruff shampoos, etc. Once I stopped relaxing my hair 2 years ago. my dandruff completely stopped. I have no scalp problems at all and I wash my hair once a week with a good sulfate free shampoo. Dont be afraid to go natural. Natural afro hair is beautiful and I promise you will feel so much better about yourself once you try going natural, There are lots of information on the web about how to take care of natural hair. You can either transition or do a big chop. Motowngirl.com, nappturality and YouTube has a great deal of information about caring for natural hair. You asked whats causing the dandruff and itching. The relaxer is causing your dandruff.

I need some help! My hair is relaxed and has been for 23 yrs. My scalp is extremely dry. It started about 3 yrs ago and it's bad! I can wash my hair and within two days I can feel it itching. It's more dry scalp then flaky.
I stay away from any products that contain alcohol. My hair stylist use Designs Shampoo for itchy scalp. I wear a lot of roller wraps. Drink plenty of water. I haven't change my diet.

I have no idea what's causing this. Any suggestions would be greatly appreicated.
