Protein Treatments for Relaxed Hair
Felicia from Fredrick, Maryland asks:
Is a protein treatment to be used before or after a relaxer? Or both?
Protein treatments are undoubtedly needed after the process, as they are meant to restore the keratin bonds that are broken down during the relaxing process, which is harsh to the strands. However, this does not exclude the use of a protein treatment before applying the relaxer. In essence, I would say both!
Most relaxed ladies have found successes by applying a hardcore protein treatment a week prior to relaxing, as this prepares the hair for the hardcore relaxing process by strengthening the hair.
The protein used immediately after rinsing out the relaxer, but usually before neutralizing, is a mild protein reconstructor (it’s mild to prevent the possibility of hair reversion), which restores the protein that was lost during the relaxing stage.
Avoid drying out your tresses, do not forget to add moisture to your regimen, because protein alone does not replenish moisture.
Remember, you must do whatever works for you! You may find that this does not work for you. I’d say test this method out and note the results; then amend the process until it’s best for you. Relaxed Ladies, feel free to add your opinions in the comments section! Thanks for your question Felicia! Until next time, Happy healthy hair growing!!!

What if you use a reconstructor regulary? Will that be too much protein or will the deep condition still moisturize enough?

I would not recommend using a reconstructor regularly unless your hair is continuing to show signs of damage. Once your hair’s health is restored, discontinue using the treatment. If it contains protein or amino acids, you need to limit usage..it needs only to be used to restore..not for a regular usage remember to maintain that protein/moisture balance….HTH.
