Natural hair can be as soft and fluffy as cotton, or as hard and brittle as a Brilo Pad; it is up to us to take the proper steps to avoiding crunchy, rough hair by using the proper tools to maintain healthier hair. Softer hair makes it more manageable and easier to style. There are many products that soften natural hair, not every product works for everyone though. I find that a few products help me to maintain soft, yet strong hair.
Shea butter
Shea butter has the ability to soften my natural hair without making it too greasy or oily.
Coconut Oil (Extra Virgin)
EVCO penetrates the hair shaft, making the hair softer and more pliable. It seals in moisture from my leave-ins and keeps my hair soft and shiny. EVCO also does not have a heavily greasy feel.
A Good Moisturizing Deep Conditioner
A good moisture DC is essential for maintaining soft hair. The moisture-protein balance in the hair is a predictor of the softness of hair as well. If you do not replenish the moisture in your hair, and have an overload of protein, your hair will look and feel harder than it should be. I use conditioners that maintain moisture balance in my hair, which makes my hair feel great!
Nature’s Gate Lavender and Aloe Conditioner, Phat Head Super Moisturizing Conditioner, and Aubrey Organics Honeysuckle Rose are a few that are in my rotation that I love.
