How to Do Piggyback Curls for African American Hair
We may consider our hair to be curly and even kinky to some extent. However, with some effort and the help of moisturizing hair products, you can achieve adorable piggyback curls in practically no time at all.
You can start by preparing the following items: moisturizing shampoo and conditioner, setting lotion or hairspray gel, wide-tooth comb, fine-tooth comb, flat tooth bristle brush, moderate size hair rollers, and hair clips. Now that you have everything you need, let’s get started
- Wash and condition your hair as usual. Make sure you are using products with extreme moisturizers. Squeeze it gently dry with a towel. After which, comb over gently with a wide-tooth comb and smooth all the tangles away.
- Apply a small amount of a light setting lotion evenly over the hair surface. If you are using a hairspray gel, then spray it on as desired.
- Separate your hair into 6 even partitions.
- Starting at the outer back, separate a small portion of the first partition with a fine toothed comb. Lay the hair over a medium sized roller and roll the hair toward the top of your head to as close to the scalp as possible. Secure the rolled hair and roller with a hairclip.
- Smooth out hair as you go. Right under the first roller, separate another layer of hair with the comb. With the roller, roll the layer upwards and secure the roller over the top of the first one. Do the same thing with the next division of hair layer and secure it on top of the 2nd layer.
- Do this with the remaining partitions of the hair until you have covered the entire hair area. The rollers will look like little pyramids on top of your head. By the way, this kind of setting is called piggyback curls because it looks like the rollers are “piggybacking” on top of each other.
- Spray on setting gel all over the head area once more and give it 20 to 30 minutes to set. If you want longer lasting curls, then give it more time. Blow dry in a low setting if needed.
- Take the rollers off and allow your hair to drop to your shoulders naturally. Run your fingers through your hair to style. Do not use a brush or a comb at this time as it may straighten out the curls.
