Beverly from Canton, OH asked:
Can you use no-lye relaxer when you’ve colored your hair? I colored my hair three days ago, and now I need to relax my hair. Is it safe?
Beverly, the answer to your question is no. After you have colored your hair, your hair is in a very weakened state due to the lightening process that has taken place. Hair dyes contain an oxidizing agent and an alkalizing agent, or ammonia. These chemicals, in conjunction with the active ingredients in no lye relaxers, can cause catastrophic results. I am referring to breakage, severe damage, and possibly scalp damage. Don’t be fooled by the term “no lye”, the relaxer still contains pH levels that are always potentially damaging to your hair.
I strongly recommend that you give your hair at least three weeks to rest. I would suggest treating your hair with a light protein deep conditioner. This will strengthen your strands and give your hair a chance to strengthen back up from the coloring process. Keep your hair moisturized in the meantime, as you do not want to approach your relaxer with dry and brittle hair. Coloring hair tends to weaken and rob the hair of its moisture. The key to keeping your strands healthy is a daily dose of moisture. Don’t forget about that protein moisture balance.
You won’t be sorry if you just wait it out for a couple more weeks. You and your hair will be glad that you did!
