What are some natural ways to soften ethnic hair?
Stacey from Norfolk,VA asked:
My hair is rock hard sometimes! Since I am embracing the whole natural thing, I am wondering what some natural ways to soften ethnic hair are. Please help.
Stacey, it seems that you have the same dilemma as many Black women do, softening your strands. Well, although it’s not always easy, the task is not impossible. I will list some ways that both naturals and relaxed ladies have enjoyed successes in their efforts to soften their tresses:
1. Applying coconut oil to your roots. This method is tried and true. The coconut oil has many properties that condition and soften the hair strands.
2. Moisturizing and sealing your hair. Use oils such as olive oil, jojoba oil, castor oil, etc to seal after moisturizing. All of these are natural oils that you can find at your local health food markets. Moisture is key for keeping hair soft.
3. Co-washing is great for softening hair. Because shampoo strips hair of its natural oils, the co-wash method prevents this from happening. Shampoo no more than once a week to keep hair moisturized.
4. Deep condition your hair at least once weekly. This is yet another way to keep strands soft and silky.
5. Stay away from heat. Heat is the hair’s enemy as it dries the hair out and strips it of it’s protective enamel. I can only assume that you utilize some heat on your hair as you complained of the hardness. Many women that use excessive heat report the “hard hair syndrome”.
6. Stay hydrated. The more water that you drink, the more moisture that your hair will obtain. So drink up!
I hope these tips will be of some benefit to you! Take care of your delicate strands and have a healthy hair growing experience!
