The Going Natural Blues

natural hair bluesOk, so let’s say you have been going natural for a few months, and you’ve been trying different hair styles and testing  different hair products, but nothing is working out for you. All you want to do is go to Wal-Mart and buy a no-lye relaxer of your choice. But wait!!! Think about this whole time you have been growing your hair out, and the little curls or kinky coils that have magically popped up. The few months that you have taken out of your life to commit to natural hair will be taken away in less than 15 minutes. Never again will the hair you grew out revert to its natural beautiful curls. Once you perm that hair you will be ready to get those curls back.

People can give you the “Going Natural Blues” also. If you live below the Mason-Dixon( the South) line like I do then you have most likely gotten ignorant comments from a few black people. (I will not say a lot of black people because all of us aren’t like that.)  They probably say, ”  Ohh your hair is going to be nappy because you don’t have that “good hair.” Some may say, ” You have to be mixed to have natural hair, and black people need to put perms on their hair.” If you let those comments stop you then going natural isn’t for you, and maybe it was just a phase you were going through. There will be people that do not know any better and you have to educate yourself enough about natural hair so you won’t get discouraged.

The best solutions to the “Going Natural Blues” is patience, confidence, and good hair care routines. Your patience will be tested by your hair and other people , your confidence may be put down by rude comments, and practicing good hair care routines will insure that you hair is healthy, neat ,and clean.

I’ve decided to go natural and I haven’t had a relaxer in 6 months. I have medium length hair. I’ve been using the 100% Aloe Vera Gel that I got from Wal-Mart for only $3.92 in a 32.oz bottle. What bothers me is that I’m having a hard time trying to style my hair. My new growth curls up and looks real nice and my relaxed hair stays straight and looks soggy, so my question is should I just cut out the damaged hair? Or is there another way to keep the length I have but still grow beautiful natural hair.

    Hi Kylie,

Have you tried bantu knot-outs, twist-outs, or flexi-rod sets? If you want to keep the length (hence the reason for transitioning), you could try those styling options. Eventually, as you know, you’ll have to cut off the relaxed hair in order to be all natural. Also, your relaxed hair seems to be lacking protein due to the soggy nature of it. You could trim off some of the ends and try the styling options I’ve mentioned. Cutting the relaxed ends off now (“Big Chop”) proves to be easier for some people, as the hair is not as vulnerable and becomes easier to style being that it’s one texture (or a fusion of your natural textures) after the “BC”.

Jordan will have great insight to your question though, she’s currently transitioning and wears some of the cutest styles! Hope this Helps in the Meantime!

I’ve just decided to go natural and I am only almost one month past my last relaxer. I know how difficult my hair is to deal with once it gets to the point that I want to relax it again and I know that I have damaged it in that stage before. I’m just wondering if you have any step by step tips that I could use to make sure that my new growth comes in healthy. I’m afraid that it will come in and that it won’t stand a chance because it will be too dry and brittle, that I may damage it in styling. I also need some ideas for styling because I don’t want to use braids, they have broken me off before and I need to look professional for work. Please Help!
