Moisturizing and Sealing Natural Hair
Thainesha From Amory, MS asks:
How often should you moisturize and seal natural hair?
Hi Thainesha, thanks for your question. Moisturizing and sealing varies from one head of curls and kinks to the next. Natural hair looooooooves moisture and moisturizing/sealing daily is beneficial for many naturals. However, for some of us, moisture may only be needed every 2-3 days.
The climate factors in heavily regarding the frequency of moisturizing and sealing. In the summer months, your hair needs moisture less than it does in the winter because of summer’s humidity. In the winter, your hair will need more moisture because of the dry air, which sucks the life moisture out of our strands.
You will have to gauge how much moisture your hair needs by the look and feel of your tresses. If your hair is feeling dry and brittle, it’s best to moisturize and seal more often. On the other hand, if your hair is beginning to feel mushy, you should ease up on the moisture.
I Hope This Helps! Keep the questions coming ladies and gents; we are delighted to help. Until next time, Happy Healthy Hair Growing!

I just wanted to comment on the frequency of needing to moisturize the hair based on your climate and humidity. Here where I live (Eastern WA) the summer humidity is very low with an average of around 20-30% while winter humidity is fairly similar. Therefore if you live in a climate like this one it may make no difference what season it is. My hair requires the same amount of moisture year round

Hi Vera, thanks for reading. That’s an interesting fact. This is why I added that we must pay attention to our strands in order to see how much moisture the hair needs b/c climates vary widely across the world…and honestly, no two heads are alike. Thanks for the tip

Hello I am a licensed cosmetologist and this is my second time going completly natural and I love it but I cant keep my hair moisturized to save my life now. The first time around I swore by shea butter, evoo and root stimulator products and they worked wonders but now it seems like it just isnt the same. I get knots seems like every 2days and I have to moisturize every morning! What do you suggest? Even professionals need education! Thanks for taking the time to read my question!

Hi Ferrari!
I would suggest you paying close attention to your hair and seeing what works for you. Knots are somewhat inevitable with natural hair, as you probably already know. I would make sure to keep manipulation to a minimum, and keep the hair stretched or in protective styles as much as possible. As far as the dry hair goes, you may be having porosity issues…try an ACV rinse to combat that. Let us know how your hair progresses.
