To Grease or Not to Grease???

Greasing The Hair

GreaseNow I know most of us (and our mothers, grandmothers, aunts, and cousins alike) have had this obsession with “greasing” our hair.  We would grease the hair, scalp, and all because that’s what we were taught would make the hair grow.  As I look back on the days where I would slap grease on my scalp every other day, I remember having a decent length of hair, however, was it really the grease that was making my hair grow?  Or was it because there was less manipulation, heat, and tension being put on the strands?  I’m not totally sure, but I am leaning towards the latter.

Most greases that we find in the beauty supply store is loaded with one of three chemicals - Petrolatum, Mineral Oil, or Lanolin.  In order to understand the original question at hand, one must understand what these three ingredients do for/to our hair, which I will elaborate on in a separate post. If you are going to use grease and you find that it gives you the results you want to see in your hair – great!  For those who don’t know what to do and would like to use grease or find better alternatives read on.

  • Use a shampoo to clarify more often when using greases in order to be able to moisturize and seal the hair
  • Use oils instead either castor oil (heavy) or lighter oils such as Olive or Coconut oils are great for the hair
  • Avoid putting grease on the scalp, if you must use it try to only seal the ends with it
  • Try shea butter on the hair as a healthier alternative
  • Use a product with one of the three ingredients (petrolatum, lanolin, or mineral oil) at the bottom of the ingredients list

The ultimate answer for us must be reached on an individual basis; everyone’s body is different.  I choose not to use grease, however, what works for me may not work for you.  We must listen to our hair and make rational decisions for ourselves.  Until next time, Happy Healthy Hair Growing!
