Spring Cleaning for Your Hair?

Now that spring is in full effect (or almost for my fellow New Yorkers), it is time to spring clean your hair. Just like your home your hair can benefit from a more comprehensive cleaning, treatment and overhaul. Don’t wait until it is too late!

Trimming vs. Dusting

Dusting is something that should be done on a regular basis while trimming can be done less often. Dusting is exactly what it sounds like. “Dust” the ends of your hair with the scissors to maintain clean ends free of scruffy ends and any lower single strand knots. The frequency is based on your hair growth and health.

Trimming is something that can be done less frequently. Personally, I rarely trim and end up trimming only 2 times per year. This will vary on texture, regular styling and health. Those with curly hair will find that trimming solely for the purpose of even length is not as necessary as those with straight textures. Trimming can be done before or after long term protective styles to prevent breakage and split ends.

The Right Conditioners

Conditioning your hair year round is always important but each season creates its own unique needs and things to combat. While almost any conditioner in the winter may work the spring and soon to come summer heat differs. For example, I have a friend who started using heavy coconut oil conditioner in the winter and could not figure out why their forehead was so oily by the spring.

Also, many women try to avoid humectants in the winter but using products with honey, aloe vera gel or vegetable glycerin are great for warm, humid days. It is extremely important to make sure your hair is well conditioned to protect it from drying heat and sun damage.

Product Dump

The adage “out with the old, in with the new” is a great spring cleaning saying. Throughout the season you probably went through tons of products that you no longer use. There is no reason to keep old products that you no longer use. This is great time to sit and decide what items have worked well for you and are used consistently. To sort through older products consider expiration dates and if they have other uses.

To find out when products expire look for a small open jar symbol. Most natural products have a shelf life of 12-24 months but it will be noted as 12m (12 months), 6m (6 months), etc. For homemade products like aloe vera gels there is very little shelf life so pay attention to the ingredients. Even though all hair loves water not everything inside of the water is good for it. Now that warmer weather is finally here many of us will start going to the pool and beach to swim. Even our own showers can work against us when it comes to hard water, a known culprit of causing dry, brittle hair. To find out if your water is hard or not purchase a parts per million (PPM) meter or simply call your local water department for readings. They will provide several numbers for each mineral. If they total above the 250-300 range then you have hard water. To keep hair soft at home consider purchasing a water softener.

Outside of the home it may be harder to avoid chlorine or salt deposits but you can combat it by seeking out chelating or “swimmers” shampoo and conditioners. These products are marketed mainly to swimmers but any good clarifying shampoo will do. As with any clarifying shampoo make sure you use a deep conditioner afterwards. If you cannot afford softeners or new products right now a quick fix is apple cider vinegar which uses its acidic base to break up mineral deposits.
