Don’t Sweat it, Just Do It! Working out and your Natural/Transitioning Hair!

Don’t Sweat it, Just Do It! Working out and your natural/transitioning hair!

Not only do we as women of color have to be concerned about the appearance of our locks when we work out and sweat away those pounds, but we also have to fear the drying effects of sweat on the scalp. Most black women don’t want to go the route of washing their hair every day…not only can that be time consuming, but extremely drying. So what do we do? Do we fall into that stereotype that labels us as overweight and lazy, due to the fact that we don’t want to “mess up our hair”? Well of course we know that’s not an option. We want to keep our bodies trim and fit without compromising the health of our hair.

These tips should help you to keep your hair in tip top condition while maintaining a workout routine:

  • Instead of washing with shampoo which is drying, try cowashing instead. Using a conditioner to wash will keep your hair moisturized.
  • Tie a cotton sash around your hair, lifting the hair off of the head. Cotton absorbs moisture better than satin or something silky. You may opt to use a Terry cloth head band to pull your hair up.
  • Wear a simple ponytail or pinup. Your ends will remain dry, and your hair this is pulled back will be fine!
  • Do not apply greasy/oily or a combination of products to your hair that will lead to product buildup and grime sweating into your face. Not attractive or comfortable!
  • Get your hair braided. Braids will endure workouts without a doubt. Plus you can pull those up and out of the way when working out!
  • Twist outs and Braid outs are great for working out. Why not create an updo with your braid outs?

Be sure that if you work out on a regular, to use a clarifying shampoo as needed. You need to rid your scalp and hair of buildup. Also, as always deep condition your strands weekly to biweekly.

Just as you take care of your body, be sure to maintain the same care for your hair.
