Co-Washing For Transitioners
Cheryl From San Diego, CA asks:
Should you do daily co washing for transitioners?
Cheryl, it is interesting that you pose the question; I am sure you aren’t the only one curious about this. There is no set guideline for co-washing. The frequency of co-washing depends on the individual and factors including whether or not you: workout frequently, have dry scalp, condition of your hair, etc. As you know, co-washing is done with a moisturizing conditioner, therefore, if overdone it may lead to limp hair and moisture overload. Make sure that the co-washing is balanced with a good protein conditioner every so often in order to maintain that moisture/protein balance.
While transitioning, your hair is in a vulnerable state because of the two different textures of hair. To start off, I would co-wash once a week, keeping the hair in protective styles in styles between co-washes. Depending on your lifestyle and what fits you, you may want to increase the frequency to twice a week. The more natural your hair gets, the more you can co-wash (natural hair adores moisture). On the other hand, if you keep your hair in braids or a similar protective style, you may co-wash once every two weeks or so. It really depends on you! In cases where circumstances don’t permit you to wash as often, utilize tea tree oil or castor oil (both have anti-microbial properties) to keep the scalp clean in between washes.
