Relaxing our hair, or continuing to do so, is a decision that we as adults have made for our own personal reasons. It really doesn’t matter why you’ve chosen to relax your hair, as long as your decision does not compromise the health of your hair. One thing that I’ve found to be true as a lady with relaxed hair is that the less chemical that I expose my hair to, the better my hair appreciates me for it. Although I’ve chosen not to go natural at this point in my life, I am aware that my chemically processed hair is less vulnerable when not so “processed”.
It was by accident, actually that I happened upon the texlaxing method. For those of you that aren’t familiar with the term texlaxing; it is the process of relaxing your hair without allowing the cream to sit on the hair for the recommended time. I guess you can even refer to it as underprocessing. Some people mix the relaxer with an oil to slow down the straightening process, essentially helping to maintain some of the natural texture. The key is to avoid the bone straight effect.
It was by accident, actually that I happened upon the texlaxing method. My hair was under processed, and after getting over my fuming at the person responsible for under processing my hair, I came to discover that my hair looked and felt healthier overall. Not only did my hair not look like a wet puppy after a few days of humidity exposure, it was actually full of life, body, and bounce. I also found that my hair was thicker and responded better to styling. In the past, my hair was limp and lifeless after relaxing the recommended time.
The next great thing about my texlaxed hair was that people even questioned whether or not I was natural! Now this took some getting used to but I came to appreciate it. I took it as a compliment!
Aside from the thickness and vitality, my hair at the roots was not as dry and brittle as it used to be when it was time for a retouch. My roots were somewhat trained to this new method. Many people don’t realize that if you over process your hair, you are actually causing your roots to become dryer and more brittle. The relaxing process actually destroys the vitality at the follicles, thereby causing brittle new growth. I could actually still see waves after texlaxing my hair. It’s actually a great feeling, and in my opinion, the best of both worlds. It’s super manageable, yet it still has some life and texture to it. Who knows where this texlaxing journey will lead me in the future. But as it stands right now I am enjoying my very healthy texlaxed tresses!!!

Are you are a sucker for infomercials? If so, then this article is just for you! Don’t be ashamed it happens to the best of us. One minute your trash talking the cheesy model holding the product, and the next minute they’ve got you! Now your digging through your wallet for your credit card with one hand and dialing the 1 800 number with the other. I know because it’s happened to me. It was much too late for me to be watching anything that wanted my money. Yet it looked so great! I couldn’t resist. You’ve probably heard of it. Chaz Dean’s Wen Hair Care Products. If you’ve ever seen the infomercial for this product you know exactly what I’m talking about! You have Chaz Dean standing there with his hair slicked back and all these women with different hair types. All the scenery is full of neutral colors and there are random shots of organic substances. It looks so healthy!

When I first saw the infomercial for the Wen Hair Products, Chaz was marketing the products as all natural. The cleansing conditioner was a five in one formula, a shampoo, conditioner, deep conditioner, detangler, and leave in conditioner. On television Chaz makes sure to mention all of the healthy ingredients that are strategically listed first on the bottle. Ingredients such as Water, Flower Extract, (Rosemary) Leaf Extract, (Sweet Almond) Oil, Hydrolyzed Wheat, and Protein make a convincing argument that this product just might be worth you money. But what Chaz fails to tell you on his infomercial is that his product is not all natural. In fact the Wen Cleansing Conditioner contains two very harmful chemicals, Butylene Glycol and menthol.

Jill Dudones tells us in her article “But, But…Butylene Glycol Does What?” That Butylene Glycol is a chemical used to keep beauty products going bad. With symptoms such as depression, vomiting, drowsiness, coma, and respiratory failure, Jill says Butylene Glycol has raised a red flag to the Unites States Food and Drug Administration for the last ten years! This chemical is clearly nothing to be messed with!

Thightlycurly.com informs us that although menthol can numb in small doses, in concentrations higher than 3% it can be irritating to the skin and if continued, can even cause changes in all layers of the mucous membranes.

Still not convinced? Lets have a little anatomy lesson. The medical dictionary describes the function of the function of the mucous membrane as to provide protection, support, nutrient absorption, and secretion of mucus, enzymes, and salts. It is advised to be delicate with the mucous membrane. Although they help protect the body, it is said the capacity for absorption can also become a problem. Many toxins and harmful substances can be quickly absorbed through the mucosa.

Now Suave just recently came out with an all natural product line. They even have the same rosemary mint scent that Wen offers. It is certified to have all organic ingredients. The Shampoo is sulfate free, but if you still prefer not to shampoo, you can co-wash with their conditioner. I have used both these products and I have used the Wen products. I can tell you from experience that it’s not worth the extra money. Wen will dry out your hair. The suave feels like I just went to the salon every time. I actually get that question every time I use it. People want to know who did my hair and when I say I did it myself, they are taken back.

A 16 oz bottle of the Wen Cleansing Conditioner is $36.95. A 32 oz bottle of Suave conditioner or shampoo is $3.49. That is the equivalent of spending about 40 bucks instead of 2. So in this case less is more! You are saving yourself health problems, money, and more work in moisturizing your hair.

Click here to view the embedded video.

1) My all time favorite product is Liv by summit. This product is great for protective hair styles such as braids and two strand twists. Since that’s all I usually wear, this product is apart of my daily regimen. Liv will have your hair feeling as soft as it did when you were a little girl. My hair despises grease. Sometimes it’s difficult to find black products that won’t weight down my hair or leave an oily residue.

For example this past month I got my hair in box braids. The African women braiding my hair had a large jug of blue grease and after she finished my hair she greased my scalp. Let me tell you, I have never had an itchier scalp! It was horrible. I couldn’t wash it out since my braids were fresh. I had to just wait until it wore out. With Liv, I can use it as often as I’d like on both my hair and scalp.

Sally’s Beauty Supply describes Liv as the ideal daily conditioner for hair that is dry or brittle due to chemical processing, over-exposure to the sun, or excessive use of blow dryer, hot curlers, and other implements. They say this light, non-greasy formula is leaves hair soft, shiny and manageable.

It is extremely important to read the ingredients in the products you use. The ingredients listed in Liv are Water (Aqua), Petrolatum, Mineral Oil (Paraffinum Liquidium) , Beeswax, Cetyl Esters, Peg-75 Lanolin, Polisorbate-60, Sodium Borate, Sorbitol, Methylparaben, Propylparaben, Fragrance (perfume).

2) Product number two is IC Hair Polisher Heat Protector Straightening Serum. This product has so many benefits! Not only does it protect your hair from heat treatments and styling, it also moisturizes you hair, leaves a great sheen, and smells incredible! I absolutely adore this product! I use it every single day without fail. Although I rarely use heat in my hair, living in a place where the sun is constantly blazing on my hair, it’s great for protection. Also because I wear a lot of twist outs I like my curls to have a shine to them. It makes my dark black hair shine in the sunlight. I would recommend this product to any one and everyone! This one that all hair types can use!

Sally’s describes this one saying, “Fantasia IC Hair Polisher Heat Protector Straightening Serum creates a barrier between heat appliances and your hair so you can style it without the fear of causing serious damage. It will add shine to your hair and moisturize it without leaving a greasy residue and heavy build up. Keep this serum next to your favorite heat styling appliance.” I have to agree completely!

Ingredients for this product include Cyclopentasiloxane , Dimethiconol , Cyclomethicone , Dimethicone , Cyclopentasiloxane , Dimethiconol , Dimethicone Crosspolymer , Amodimethicone , Phenyl Trimethicone , Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract , Tocopheryl Acetate (Vit. E), Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate , Fragrance.

3) Silk Elements Mixed Silk Leave-In Conditioner is the third product I can’t go without! I never heard of this product until I was looking for a new leave-in one day with my grandmother. I simply asked one of the employees what her best recommendation would be. I didn’t know that one question would uproar a debate amongst the entire store. Suddenly every woman started telling me how fabulous this product was and how I have to try it! So I decided to give it a whirl and after the first use, I was hooked! This product had given my hair so much moisture! Although it worked great with my two strand twist, it worked wonders when I flat ironed my hair! I would definitely recommend using this product with styles using heat, blow dyers, flat irons, curling irons, ect.

“Silk Elements Mixed Silk Leave-in Conditioning Creme is specially formulated to leave curls bouncy, vibrant, and healthy-looking. Defines, tames, and hydrates natural curls and waves. Great as a daily detangling, shine enhancing and nourishing treatment that restores manageability and style.”, is how Sally’s is defining this product.

The ingredients are WATER ,AMODIMETHICONE ,WHEAT AMINO ACIDS ,STEARALKONIUM CHLORIDE ,GLYCERIN ,CETEARYL ALCOHOL ,POLYSORBATE 60 ,METHYL GLUCETH-20 ,GUAR HYDROXYPROPYLTRIMONIUM CHLORIDE ,ETHYLHEXYL METHOXYCINNAMATE ,HYDROXYETHYLCELLULOSE ,SIMMONDSIA CHINENSIS (JOJOBA) SEED OIL ,CARTHAMUS TINCTORIUS (SAFFLOWER) SEED OI ,OENOTHERA BIENNIS (EVENING PRIMROSE) OIL ,SILK AMINO ACIDS ,HYDROLYZED COLLAGEN ,DMDM HYDANTOIN ,METHYLCHLOROISOTHIAZOLINONE ,METHYLISOTHIAZOLINONE ,YELLOW 5 ,YELLOW 6 ,FRAGRANCE ,ALPHA ISOMETHYL IONONE ,BENZYL BENZOATE ,BENZYL SALICYLATE ,CITRONELLOL ,HEXYL CINNAMAL ,LIMONENE ,LINALOOL.

4) My fourth favorite product is one that my sister introduced to me. She’s relaxed so I hadn’t paid her products much attention, but this one stood out. I was visiting her for the weekend and had forgotten all my hair products at home. I was wearing two stand twist and planned to take it the next day for my birthday dinner. She was using Palmer’s Olive Oil Hair Conditioner Spray while flat ironing her hair. She told me I could use some so I sprayed it on top of my two strand twist and massaged it in. My twists had an instant sheen and the next day when I took them down they were full of moisture and still shined! This product is a must have for people that wear a lot of protective hair styles!

Palmer’s website says “Palmer’s Olive Oil Formula Conditioning Spray Oil, a luxurious natural spray oil, helps condition hair and scalp with its special formulation of Extra Virgin Olive Oil and Vitamin E. This easy to use spray oil is ideal for braids and weaves.” This spray can be used for several styles and naturals, transitioners, and relaxed women can use it!

Main ingredients include Carola Oil, Isopropyl, Myristate, Olea Europea Fruit Oil, Dimethicone, Tocopheryl Acetate, Cocyl, Hydrolyzed Keratin, Fragrance.

5) My fifth and final must have product is Johnson’s Baby Shampoo. Maybe you want to stop using that shampoo that strips you hair! This is the perfect option for you! The no tears formula is created to gently cleanse baby’s delicate scalps without harming them with rough chemicals. Why not treat yourself to that same care! I use this product when I’m not using my Suave naturals and when I feel my scalp is extremely dirty. After I use it, each strand of my hair feels purified. I highly recommend this product to anyone who’s hair is sensitive to shampoo like mine is.

The included ingredients are Water, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, PEG-80 Sorbitan Laurate, Sodium Trideceth Sulfate, PEG-150 Distearate, Fragrance, Polyquaternium-10, Tetrasodium EDTA, Quaternium-15, Citric Acid, Yellow 10 and Orange 4. May also contain: Citric Acid, Sodium Hydroxide.

When it comes to deep conditioners, we all pretty much want the same things from them; healthier hair! There are several great deep conditioners already on the market that guarantee great results, so why put yourself through the unnecessary trouble? Well for one, homemade conditioners are lacking something that most of the manufactured ones aren’t such as silicones, mineral oil, parabens, and fragrances; all of which can be very damaging to your hair! Let’s face it, natural is better. Remember, deep conditioners sit on the hair in order to penetrate to the roots, you want natural and wholesome to do this job! Here a few simple ones to get you started that work great for ethnic hair.

Jojoba Oil and Beer Deep Conditioner: One teaspoon of jojoba oil and one cup of warm beer. Mix well and massage into scalp for optimal results.

Coconut Oil and Avocado Conditioner: Blend a mashed avocado with coconut milk. Let it sit on hair for one hour. Wash.

Honey Olive Oil Conditioner: Take 1/2 Cup honey and add to 1/4 cup of olive oil. Mix well and let sit on hair for one hour before rinsing.

Egg and Olive Oil Conditioner: Take one whole egg, ¼ cup olive oil and ¼ cup of mayonnaise. Mix all the ingredients well. Massage gently into scalp.

These homemade conditioners work well for treating damaged, color treated, or over-processed hair. What’s even better is that they are inexpensive to make and you probably have these ingredients right in your refrigerator or pantry.
Good luck becoming more wholesome! Stay tuned for Homemade Deep Conditioners for Black Hair-Part 2!

I had the pleasure of sitting down with Ashley, a long time BHP member, for an interview about her gorgeous texlaxed hair. Ashley is an aspiring songstress and a graduate of Clark Atlanta University.

Where are you from?
I’m from Atlanta GA.

How long have you had a texturizer?
I have had a texturizer since 2005 and I love it. It has gotten me more comfortable with the way that my hair looks and feels.

What are some of the benefits of having tex-laxed hair? Any disadvantages?
Well I used to have a relaxer and I noticed a huge difference in the thickness and texture of my hair.
My hair is a lot thicker and softer. I like having a texturizer because it softens your natural wave pattern and makes it more manageable, so I can straighten my hair when I want or wear it wavy.

What are some of your favorite hair care products?
My favorite products would have to be Aubery Organics.
I love Amla oil and pretty much anything thats natural.
But I also love Aphegee, Redken and Design Essential products.

What is your hair care regimen?
Vitamins with amino acids..wash when needed, I condition with my steamer. And I try to use heat as little as possible. I keep my scalp healthy and oiled. That’s pretty much the most that I do to my hair.

What is your secret weapon for keeping your hair healthy and looking great?
Ok..I have color in my hair so my secret weapon to keep my hair from breaking is Rosa Mosquta by Aubery Organics.
Or you can simply get a hot oil treatment with rose hips or Rosa Mosquta. Its a fruit from India that works miracles on your hair as well as skin whether its dry, scarred, or cracked.

What is one piece of advice you’d give to ladies new to their hair care journey?
Take care of your hair like it is your child. It is a never ending job but it’s fun and worth it.

What is your ultimate hair care goal?
My ultimate goal is to keep my hair healthy while growing it out longer, and to keep it looking good.

My name is Latrell. I’m from South Carolina. I have used all sorts of hair vitamins: Afro 360, Exotic Allure and others. You name it I have used it. I have just started using Simply Growth Vitamins about a couple days ago and I have already seen new hair coming in. I have never experienced that with any of the other hair vitamin i was amazed by it.

I was skeptical about them because I have used so many different brands before and none of them have done what Simply Growth did. It took 2 -3 months with another brand names; I never saw results. My hair was really slow to come in. exotic allure the same and afro 360 it took a while. I thought i was going to be really disappoint again with Simply growth i’m not going to lie. But I’m not i have new growth already like I said I have been using it two days and I already see growth. Like I said with the other products I didnt see results it took a couple of months but i already see
it with Simply growth.

Obtaining Thicker and Healthier Relaxed Hair

Obtaining healthy and long African American hair is relatively easy. As long as you have enough dedication and you stick to the routine, you will have healthy, long, and beautiful tresses in no time.

If you are suffering from thin and dry hair, it is not advisable to shampoo daily. Wash your hair once a week. Daily shampooing and conditioning aggravates the hair’s dryness, making it more prone to damage and hair loss.

When trying to achieve healthy hair, do not forget to take care of you scalp too. The scalp plays a very big role in getting healthy hair. This is where the natural oils of the hair are produced. Oil the scalp regularly, using natural oils, preferably at night where you can leave it overnight.

Use products that will moisturize your hair effectively. Go for organic and natural products. These products are the gentlest, and they do not contain any harsh chemical ingredients that cause more damage to your hair. Giovanni has a line of hair care products to choose from that are all natural, perfect for thin and permed hair

Choose shampoos and conditioners that are gentle yet provide maximum moisture. Some products do not agree with permed hair, always check the label. The best products are those that clarify, moisturize, and enhance. You would be lucky if you find all three benefits in one product. If you cannot find one, then I suggest you use Giovanni to clarify and condition, then follow it up with Dr. Miracle for growth stimulation.

Strengthening and protecting your hair is also of utmost importance. Protein is an active ingredient in some shampoos and conditioners that does wonders in protecting and strengthening the hair. Silicon mixes and olive oil have also been proven to help in this area. These products will help in thickening your thin permed hair, at the same time providing the necessary protection it needs from further damage.

To get maximum results for healthy hair, using a leave in conditioner will help considerably. Also, try to use cholesterol products for deep conditioning twice a week. Cholesterol helps in enhancing body and luster to the hair. As stated earlier, do not shampoo daily, but you can use leave in conditioners as much as you want. If you have extra dry and itchy scalp, you may wash your hair without shampoo and instead just use a mild conditioner. After rinsing off, style your hair as usual and apply a leave in conditioner.

To get maximum moisture, consider hot oil treatments. Hot oil treatments can be done at home with the perfect hot oil cream. Better yet, apply it to your hair before entering the sauna or while in the shower. The steam will help in speeding up the effect of the cream. L’Oreal hot oil treatment and Dr. Miracle’s tingling oil are best for permed hair.

Styling permed and thin hair can prove to be a problem. Stay away from heat styling items, the use of rollers will be less damaging. Heat is permed hair’s worst enemy!

Always remember to manage your hair gently. Use a wide-tooth comb whenever possible. Use clarifying products once a month, moisturize every day, use only products that are gentle and harmless (free of harsh chemical compounds), you get best results from leave in conditioners if left overnight, and remember that natural and organic products the best products to use for thin and permed African American hair. Use growth-stimulating products to achieve the desired hair length faster.

You too can have healthy permed hair, consistency is key! Happy Hair Growing!

I am always looking forward to thicker edges so I brought it. I paid about 12 dollars for the 2 oz jar so I was confident that this would work. Luckily, it did. I used this balm on my temples ONLY!!! It’s recommended that you do not use this on your nape area. I’m not exactly sure why they say this, but we’ll let someone else figure that out. They have directions for a reason! Anyways, I would apply this balm to my temples just like if I was using gel, and I feel in love with it!!! Of course, I didn’t see results with in the same week but by the time I finished the jar, my edges had grown thicker! I used this twice a day and its recommended that you use it after shampooing. This product is not greasy so it won’t leave a bunch of grease on your head and even though it doesn’t smell very pleasant, it worked for me. Just like any other product you should make sure you follow the directions and just apply a little the very first time using it to insure that you won’t have a bad reaction. This product passes in my grade book any day; it was my 12 dollars well spent. Its now one of my favorite products!
