“Just Let Your Soul Glo”-The Return of the Jheri Curl

The jheri curl – Just let your soul glow

jheri curl If you have ever seen the Eddie Murphy film “Coming to America” then more than likely you may remember a scene with his arch rival sporting a vintage jheri curl. I think after that movie the jheri curl became a big joke. After that mockery was brought to light, to have a curl would definitely put you in that undesirable group.  I remember the days of the Jheri curl vs. the Luster curl, and competing to see which one was best. It’s laughable now to even think about those juicy, shiny, drip drip long curls. Even funnier is that I actually used to think that girls with a jheri curl were kinda sexy. Maybe I was blinded by the glistening aloe vera scented tresses. I guess you had to be there, but I have to admit there was a time when the curl ruled the world.

So what I am arriving at while “slipping and slididng” down memory lane is that, I am amazed that even in the new millennium, we still have a few stragglers who yet are holding on to the Jheri Curl. No mam, I am not talking about the new slightly texturized curl, that looks similar to a wet curly perm. I am referring to the Eazy E Rockn’ Non Stop on the Radio Jheri Curl.

Okay, picture this; it’s a hot summer’s day in Memphis, Tn. You walk into Mc Donald’s and you begin to browse the dollar menu that you have looked at a million times. When suddenly a bushy headed figure steps out in front of the menu, with that juicy curl, the one that you know died with Curtis Blow and Full Force. I think the dude must have either been frozen in A Cryogenics Experiment in 1985, walked in a time warp, or just got released from jail after 20 years. I wasn’t sure, but the brother was wearing that curl like it was the latest and hottest thing out there.  Basically, my experience helped me to realize that the jheri curl is still obviously alive and well; at least that’s what this character was confirming! I recently saw some teenagers wearing high top fades like Kid N Play, so unfortunately I fear that that the curl will resurface in the near future. Heaven help us! Until then, continue to “just let your soul glow”.
