Five Tips to Remember When Visiting the Salon

The last thing you’d want for your hair is a disaster—especially if you’re shelling out your hard earned cash. While most women see a visit to the salon as a treat, some have had experiences that taught them to arrive a little more cautious and prepared. Just keep in mind these five simple guidelines on your next visit (especially if it will be your first visit to a particular salon):

1. Get References When Possible

A friend or family member who has had a positive experience (or more) is a great resource to help determine if a certain salon is the right one for you. Ask them if they have a favorite stylist, what kinds of products the shampoo person uses, and if the establishment caters to your hair needs. This will save the time and trouble sometimes encountered when you look up random salons on the internet.

2. Observe and Assess

How’s the stylist’s own hair? What does the general hair health of the customers look like? This speaks volumes because it demonstrates if a stylist really cares about healthy hair and what the fruit of their labor looks like. Another observation to make is whether or not the place has a steady flow of business and if the stylists arrive on time and keep appointments well. Make your assessments based on everything you observe in the salon—what’s in there tells a story, and you want a happy ending to your own experience.

3. Ask Questions

If you’re curious or nervous about something, ask away! Whether it’s a question about the salon’s specialties, or methods or hours of operation, the only way you’ll be more informed about how things work is by asking about them. It may feel awkward if you’re not used to it, but as a paying customer, you’re entitled to have your concerns and questions addressed.

4. Make Sure the Stylist Knows What an Inch Means

Some women have walked into a salon asking for an inch or a quarter-inch to be trimmed off and walked out nearly in tears. If you’re going to request or allow a trim, and if you specify how much you want taken off, make sure the stylist is on the same page. Even if you have to gesture with your hand and demonstrate exactly how much you want taken off, it’s better to be explicit instead of leaving it up to the judgment of the stylist. Without saying, make sure you’re facing a mirror so you can see what the stylist is doing.

5. Don’t be Afraid

Finally, don’t be afraid to tell the shampoo person that she’s handling your hair too roughly, or the stylist that she’s using too much heat and needs to spray on a protectant, or that you do not want a pair of shears anywhere near your head, or even that…you don’t like what’s being done to your hair. Of course this should be done in a constructive manner, but all too often we have been taught to be polite and don’t complain, or some of us are just naturally timid and shy. However, when it comes to your hair, it’s up to you to decide what’s best for it and what kind of style you want.

Not all salon experiences are negative, and certainly there are plenty of salons that are top notch and keep their clients happy. These five tips are helpful to keep in mind for those of us who don’t usually frequent salons or who are going to one for the first time. As the saying goes, “it’s better to be safe than sorry,” so hopefully these tips can keep your hair safe, and if the salon is one that performs well, then you won’t be sorry!

Who is the best hairstylists for you?

So how do you know when it’s time to choose another stylist? Well it may become painfully apparent when you have tried to contact her for two weeks straight and the only response you’re getting is a secretary’s scripted reply that she’ll be sure to return your call at her earliest convenience. (For all practical purposes, I will refer to stylist as a female) Or the last several visits you have made to your salon have left you feeling a void or complete dissatisfaction. How about your stylist does a fantastic job with your hair and it always looks great, but you just don’t feel that she’s putting enough into the care of your tresses? Well, essentially these grievances are quite common among the masses. It seems however, that we as human beings have fallen prey to being creatures of habit. We wonder if we depart with our stylists or salon that we have gotten so accustomed to for years, we may somehow feel a loss or incompletion. The fact of the matter is that you could not be more wrong. When you are discontent with your stylist, whether for miniscule or significant reasons, you end up wasting time and money anyway therefore; it is time to pack up and begin your quest for someone who will fulfill your hair care needs. Or you may be one of many that do not have a stylist to call their own. You are somewhat of a drifter, floating from salon chair to the next in hopes of discovering your ideal hair expert.

The first thing that you must realize in seeking a stylist to call your own is compatibility. Now by compatibility I don’t mean that you have to become brunch buddies or even establish a lasting friendship. But you will know when you are compatible with your stylist by how the two of you interact. Of course if you are going to be spending a few hours a week or biweekly with this person you should at least be cordial and diplomatic. It should be that of a working relationship. Is she capable of knowing what is right for you? Can she decipher your own interpretation of what your hair desires and goals are and willing to work with you to reach them? Compatibility as with any relationship depends greatly on the two parties involved having a common goal and agreement on the issues at hand. Your questions for your potential stylists should revolve around how she will relate to your desires and concerns. Is she sensitive to your hair issues? Is she willing to work with what you on what others would consider difficult endeavors? And lastly how personable is she to you? Sit down and discuss these issues with her before making final decisions.

Another huge factor to reflect upon when choosing a stylist is professionalism. If I had a dime for every time I heard a lady or man complain about how their beautician or stylist is inconsiderate of their time, I’d be a wealthy lady! Inconsideration on the stylist’s part includes overlap scheduling or not having the common courtesy to call ahead when the y will be late. I’ve arrived at the salon countless amounts of times to just discover that the stylist wasn’t even there yet!! Yet, no call ahead to notify me of this huge nuisance. I know that many of you will be able to relate to the stylists that allow you to remain under the hair dryer or steamer far beyond the required time to get caught up on all clients that she’s overloaded with, due to the fact that she has overlapped the schedules. So when you are choosing your stylist, be sure to do your research. Ask former clients or existing clients how professional this person is with her clients. Also make it very clear to her ahead of time that your time is, as you are sure hers is as well, precious and you will appreciate consideration of that. If she is a professional, it will become evident by the way that she handles this statement. If she jumps on the defense then that is your cue to run!

You may want to consider a stylist that is a part of a salon with a receptionist. These types of establishments are often run by a manager that monitors the scheduling procedures. These are usually your no nonsense type of places. You will probably find it easier to schedule appointments as well as avoid overlapping of appointments. Some department stores like JCPenney have reputable salons that people enjoy because of the professionalism provided. It is my experience that these facilities run smoothly.

Some of the more obvious factors of finding the perfect stylist for you are expertise and experience. Do your research. Don’t be afraid to ask questions and check credentials. Believe it or not, many people overlook the obvious concerns such as: Is she licensed by the state? How many years has she been in the business? Does she attend furthering education courses to keep abreast of all of the current techniques and trends? And finally are there any formal complaints against her? You may even check the state for complaints and licensing credentials. You don’t want someone who is just great at styling hair, but someone who can maintain the health of your hair as well. Remember it is your hair care at stake, so take that extra mile to ensure proper care.

Word of mouth never fails as a worthy way of picking a stylist. You may happen upon someone with that perfect style. Ask who styled their hair? Don’t be afraid to get some recommendations!!

Finally go with your instincts. If you feel at home with the potential stylist right away, I’d say that counts for a lot! If something seems fishy then it is likely your suspicions are correct. Remember choosing the right stylists is not an effortless task, but once you have gotten it down to an art, your rewards of great hair care and years of fabulous styles will be your reward!!
