Clean those Barber Clippers!

When going to the barbershop it can either be a hassle or an enjoyable ritual depending on the barber. Most patrons wouldn’t even think of asking or looking to see how the barber stores their clippers. Although the state regulates and has safety standards for barbers, it’s rather difficult to enforce them. So let’s just go through a checklist of what you want to see when entering a barber shop.

1) The first thing I look for is basically the floor and surrounding areas. If they take time to clean the floor even on a busy Saturday, that is a plus.
2) If someone is presently in the chair and you’re next, check to see they have any hair bumps, rashes, or any other infectious looking skin problems. I can tell you in my experience getting my hair cut on several occasions I have seen bleeding bumps, or dry white patches on the person’s head in front of me. If I am not comfortable with the spray disinfectant cleaning the clipper then….I leave the shop to get chopped up another day.
3) Do they have the ultra-violet disinfection light box? Are the clippers facing the light?
4) When you’re getting into the chair there are two thing you need to ask your barber: “Can you brush out and spray those liners(with a disinfectant) and those clippers too?” Don’t be afraid to ask; you can get razor bumps and a whole host of other nasty little infections. Its been reported here http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2932524/ that there is possible HIV transmission via barber clippers.

I cant stress enough on telling your barber to clean his or her clippers before each cut. I would say the liners are the most important thing to be cleaned. They should be brushed and spray with some barber disinfectant for at least 10 minutes before they touch your skin. Its also important for you to see the head of the person that those clipper just got through with. Remember you go to get your child’s or your hair straight, so don’t go home with a head full of problems.

How to Choose a Barber

Choosing a barber, whether its because you have relocated, tired of your previous barber, or just want a different take on what a barber can do with your do, can be a task. Barbers, like a good woman are hard to find. Cutting hair isn’t only a necessity it is an art form. A bad hair cut can ruin a first date, job interview, and many other important events in ones life. What you should look for is a clean environment, professional and timely hair cut, and a barber that adjusts to your head and profile.

Barber shops in themselves can be a health hazard. The fallen hair and close proximity to each other can pass allergens and disease. The first thing especially in black barber shops is to make sure that the floors are swept to ensure that you don’t track some ones hair home with you. Secondly, the clippers and liners need to be brushed and thoroughly cleaned before each use. You should insist that the clippers face upwards in the ultra-violent box, liners most of all, should be sprayed with germicide to kill possible dangerous pathogens. Last thing on the keep you safe list is that they place some type of antiseptic around where the liners came in contact with the skin.

The one thing I hate is barbers who don’t show up on time. The barber you choose should be on time for the appointment set. Another thing you should watch out for is the barber who stops to talk with other customers while cutting your hair. Shooting the breeze about sports, politics, or religion makes a 30 minute hair cut into and hour. Bad hair cuts are sometimes the outcome of not paying attention to you while talking with the other barbers and patrons. Insist on a fast and professional hair cut.

Cutting hair is no doubt an art form, and you should seek a Michelangelo to cut your hair. Good barbers usually stay busy, so you do sometimes have to be rather flexible to fit into their schedule. Sometimes you can get lucky and find a new young barber who hasn’t gotten discovered and they should be able to get you in most of the time.

Remember finding a barber is not only for a good a hair cut, it is for making a statement in the real world. Good barber hunting!
