How to care for African American Children Hair

How to Care for Black Children Hair

Many little girls of color fear that they will never enjoy long locks. But this does not have to be the case by far. We should know by now that there’s evidence that African American hair can be healthy and beautiful!

African American hair is curly and delicate by nature.  Therefore, in order for your child to grow healthy, strong, and manageable hair, you have to maintain it at a very young age.  Help her develop a hair care routine at an early age, which she will surely benefit her for years to come.

First and foremost, it is very important to keep your child’s hair clean and moisturized at all times.  Since your child’s hair is at its most delicate stage, purchase a shampoo and conditioner that are proven effective yet gentle on your child’s tresses.  Try out Dove and Mixed Chicks.  These products are all natural.  They have proven to gently cleanse and moisturize even the most delicate of hair types.  Furthermore, they are reported to have detangling effects on a young girl’s hair making it easier to comb and manage.

Excessive washing of your young daughter’s hair might leave it dry.  It is advisable to wash and shampoo her hair once to twice a week at most. Also, do not forget to condition the hair after each wash.  Leave the conditioner on 10 to 20 minutes before rinsing off.  Make sure that her hair is rinsed properly to avoid residue build up.  Proper conditioning will lock in the natural hair moisture.  More so, conditioning is the best way to keep your child’s hair free of tangles thus making it so much easier to manage.

Every weekend, before she goes to sleep, dab on some natural olive oil to her scalp and massage the scalp gently.  If done routinely, this will help promote the natural oil production of her hair and scalp.  Wrap her hair around a soft, comfortable scarf and leave it on overnight.  Do not make her sleep on coarse pillowcases, as this will result to hair break and damage.  Invest in a smooth and soft silk pillowcase to avoid this problem.

Children tend to enjoy being in the sun; keep her hair protected by using ultraviolet hair creams.  Better yet, make her use a cap whenever she is outdoors. The sun can cause damage to the hair just as much as it does to the skin.

Gently brush and comb your child’s hair everyday, especially at night.  This will help get rid of the dreaded tangles and will stimulate blood circulation in your child’s scalp.  Braiding her hair can be a very effective way to protect your child’s hair from drying.  However, it is vital that you remember never to braid it too tightly as this may cause hair stress and inevitable breakage.  It has also been said that braiding can enhance faster hair growth.

With your loving help, she can start her hair care regime early in her life.  Once she practices it regularly, she will surely enjoy healthy, beautiful, and lustrous hair for the rest of her life.
