How to Avoid Using Gel on Relaxed Hair

Briana from Compton, CA asked:
How do I keep from using gel on my relaxed hair?
If you are using gels on your hair, then you are likely to experience dryness and possible breakage around your edges. Gels contain alcohol and other harmful ingredients such as polymers, synthetic materials that have mostly negative effects on your hair. The reason that black women usually use gels on their hair is to keep the edges laid down or “slick” as some refer to it. The problem is that most don’t wash the components of the product out right away, allowing the residual ingredients to settle in and reak havoc on the hair. I do believe that if you washed it out after several hours, the results could be avoided.
The first thing that I suggest is to replace your hair gel with a natural ingredient that works just as well, and that is ALOE VERA GEL! I have replaced commercial gels that I used in the past with this natural product, and have found the results to not only be the same as far as keeping the edges down, but it also proved to make my hair shinier!
You don’t have to go out and buy the plant, just pick up some of the gel from a local health food store. You won’t be sorry, and your hair will be so much happier than with those drying commercial gels. I hope this helps, Briana!

Great answer! Aloe Vera Gel does work wonders…we need to avoid using regular gel on relaxed and natural hair!

Be careful with aloe vera gel and look at the ingredients. I just had to throw out some the other day that had SD Alcohol 40 as the second ingredient and Aloe Vera as the third!
Seals nicely too if you mix some hair oil in with it prior to application.
