ALOE VERA GEL FOR NATURAL HAIR (repost)

Do you ever get tired of searching through forums and the net reading up on the latest “it” factor for moisture or growth?  Are you exhausted after reading through the labels for hair care products?  Do you need to tame the inner PJ (product junkie) in you from buying tons of expensive products that claim to fulfill your hair care needs?  Well, look no further than today’s post!  Aloe Vera Gel is an all natural alternative to many store bought/synthetic products; and it has been established as a very helpful tool in the management of our hair!

So, I have officially jumped on the Aloe Vera bandwagon!  I have found it to be excellent for my coils and curls.

Aloe Vera Gel Benefits for Hair:

  • Detangles
  • Moisturizes
  • Activates Fresh Growth
  • Heals and Soothes Damaged Scalp from Scratches, Burns, Dandruff, etc.
  • Reduces Dandruff, Itchy, Scaly Scalp and Seborrheic Dermatitis
  • Balances pH Level (Porosity) of Hair
  • Tames Oily Hair
  • Defines Curl
  • May Serve as a Holding Gel
  • Prevents Excessive Hair Loss
  • Enhances Cellular Rejuvenation
  • Contains Natural Building Enzyme for Proteins
  • Anti-Inflammatory

After reading all of those pros, we see that Aloe Vera Gel isn’t just excellent for the skin or its internal effects on the body, but it’s great for the hair as well!  I say it’s worth a try!  I use the pure Aloe Vera Gel by Lily of the Desert.  I’ve been using it for my entire duration as a natural, and I notice when I haven’t used it in a while.   I haven’t had a chance to experiment with its growth properties on my hair yet, as I have been using it on the hair as a moisturizer not on the scalp (I’m trying castor oil for growth on my scalp thanks to the bhp Castor Oil Challenge).  Some mix aloe vera gel with glycerin and rosewater for moisture.  I have also heard of the coconut milk, aloe vera, and wheat germ oil combination for a growth shampoo.

I use my gel straight out of the bottle, though I’m not opposed to adding other ingredients to it to make a thrifty concoction.  In addition, the aloe vera/shea butter/coconut oil combination is golden!  I moisturize my hair with the Aloe Vera Gel, applying it directly onto the hair, then I seal with coconut oil.  I strongly suggest sealing the AV gel with an oil in order to lock in the moisture.

Though I love Aloe Vera Gel, I would recommend that anyone who is willing to try it, use it with caution, as everyone’s hair and body does not react the same way to all products, natural or not.  If you decide to try the Aloe Vera Gel, I strongly suggest that you use the all natural Aloe Vera Gel with no alcohols and/or little to no preservatives.  A health food store is the best place to find such, although through a careful search at WalMart (and maybe even your neighborhood pharmacy), you will probably be able to locate it as well.

    A few questions:

-Do you use the aloe on dry hair or wet from the shower hair?

    -Do you apply it daily?

-What “grade” of hair do you have (4a,b, etc.)?

-My Lily of the Desert-Whole leaf gel says it has to be refrigerated. Is that how you keep yours? If so, do you apply it cold?

Sorry, that was a lot of questions!

    THANKS! :)

    Hi Jasali!

Thanks for your questions & thanks for reading.

    1. Use it on wet or dry hair. Usually I use it on wet hair not only to moisturize, but to “set” a knot-out, twist-out, etc. However, I use it on dry hair to re-moisturize the hair as well. I find shea butter & aloe vera very useful, which I’ll blog about soon.

    2. Daily…mmmm, sometimes. I get a bit lazy and neglect to moisturize and seal sometimes b4 going to bed, however it can be applied daily for moisturizing benefits.

    3. My hair would be typed at 4b coarse hair with a dash of 4a in the front.

    4. I have the same brand you have, it must be kept refrigerated so if the temp is too cold for you to handle let it sit at room temp for just a little while and then apply it to your hair. I apply it straight out of the fridge though, sometimes the coolness soothes my scalp and keeps the cuticle of the hair sealed.

If you have any additional questions feel free to ask!!! I’m sure inquiring minds want to know
    :)

Hi, I’m 17 and have natural hair

I was just wondering.. I live in London, and some things in America we don’t have here

I bought some AV gel today from a health store, and it states the ingredients are 100% natural,

should I still use it on my hair if it’s not just purely AV gel?

Really like your site by the way lol I’ve collected many tips from it

    God bless =]

    Hi Isioma,

What brand do you have? If you bought it from the health food store, you are likely fine. As long as it doesn’t have a high alcohol content (or content of drying agents), you have a good brand. The kinds I use have to be refrigerated, so it’s the closest to pure that’s out there.

Thanks for your question and for reading the site. I hope you continue to enjoy it!

Love this article as well as aloe vera gel! My hair is natural also and I use aloe vera gel as a leave-in conditioner. Since Ive been using it, I NEVER see hair in my combs whenever I comb it. It is definitely a good moisturizer and a staple in my hair care regimen. ;-)

I love aloe vera gel. I use it for setting my twists in conjunction with my homemade moisture spritz. Defines my curls better than any other gel I’ve tried without the crunch!!

Im a fan of the Aloe only Made from Earth skincare line. I have never seen a more natural aloe. It is not a gel – its a thick lotion-type product that feels exactly like aloe.

No scent, no color. Just aloe vera.

It is refreshing straight out of the bottle at room temp or can be kept in the frig for a more cooling, soothing immediate effect.

Hi there awesome information you have and I have a few questions if you don’t mind

Where do you buy that aloe Vera stuff? I also live in America so yeah

Once you buy it you just put it in your hair like that or do you do something to it?

How long did it take you for your hair smooth and soft?

Sorry for all these questions by the way I’m just 12 so I know nothing about haircare but I saw this and wanted to know how it works because my hair is like frizzy and always rough feeling by the time I’m at school and I hate it and my hair is kind of wavy please answer my questions thank you :D

      Hi there Diana!

I buy my Aloe vera gel from vitaminshoppe.com or in the store. Many health food stores carry it.
I put it in my hair straight out of the bottle. The product works instantly, and the “hold” aspect of the product works as soon as the hair dries fully.

You should be sure to ask your parents to read up on different information as far as haircare goes. Maybe if you all read through some helpful information together, you’ll come up with some new, innovative ways to take care of your hair. Your mom can even join a forum to get more resources. Your hair is beautiful I’m sure; you all will just have to find better ways to take care of it. Enjoy school and enjoy your hair.
