A Natural’s Perspective Part-Part II

More from  BHP’s very own Amina. I hope that you’ll enjoy reading as much as I enjoyed interviewing her!

What has been the single most helpful thing in your natural hair care journey (forums, hair care products, etc)?
Hands down, the forum! I have noticed more growth, thickness, and optimal hair health since joining the bhp family! I would have been tempted to relax without the wealth of information I have from the forum.

What advice would you give to ladies who are considering transitioning?
Go for it! There is so much information out here nowadays that there is no excuse for you not to go ahead and take the plunge into your natural hair care journey. Join a supportive forum (bhp forum is excellent), map out your hair care goals, and make sure it is what you really want to do! Let transitioning to natural be something that you look forward to, do not let it be a burden unto you. There will be obstacles along the way, but as long as you keep in mind that this is a goal that you are eager to achieve, you will be fine.

What are some examples of typical responses (positive and negative) that you get from people in regards to being natural?

I get tons of compliments on my hair. There is no one typical response, but the vast majority of reactions to my hair (especially from the public) is positive. Many people are intrigued by my natural hair and the fact that it looks so “neat” and “pretty”. I get many stares and those who want to feel my hair. It shocks people to see that afro-textured hair can be so soft and cottony, when it has always been thought of as rough and matted :smh:.
The negativity, though it is infrequent, has come from people who wonder why would I chop off my relaxed hair to go natural, since my hair was so pretty relaxed. “I liked you better with straight hair,” one person said. It irritated me at first, but now it doesn’t phase me. My response to that is – “Get to liking it or Get Lost!”

If you had to choose one hairstyle to wear every day of the year, what would it be?
You already know this – the stretched bantu knot out!!! I know I would probably get tired of it though. As long as I have the option to pin it up and manipulate the style in different ways, I won’t feel like I’m denying my natural hair of its freedom and versatility *smiles*

What are your hair care goals for 2010?
Keep it Simple! Low manipulation, stick to the basics, and be patient…basically to continue to do what I’ve been doing thus far!
