2010 Black Hairstyles Relaxed

2010 African American Hair Styles – Relaxed

Kellee StewartWith the increasing natural phenomenon in the Black community, it seems that relaxed hairstyles have taken sort of a back seat. Everywhere you turn, you see natural ladies sporting those lovely curly and kinky locks, twists, and fros.  It makes you wonder what styles will take precedence for women with relaxed hair, with the assumption that the remaining percentage of ladies that haven’t gone “au natural” will remain relaxed. But I am here to assure you that there are plenty of ladies, such as myself, that have no plans of “converting” anytime soon. With that being said, we can make some predictions on upcoming hairstyles of 2010 for relaxed heads.

The texlaxed/textured look-You’re going to see less of the “bone straight” tresses in 2010, and a whole lot more of the textured look. It’s all about getting a little closer to your “roots” so to speak, and it’s the perfect alternative for ladies who aren’t quite ready to go completely natural, but aren’t interested in that extreme straight look. I like to call it the happy medium.

The braid out or two strand twist- Who says that relaxed ladies can’t rock the twists and braid outs?  With the wave of natural hairstyles, this style allows relaxed ladies the versatility to enjoy some waves without giving up the option of straight tresses. Because these two styles are easy and long wearing, more ladies will take them on in the New Year! The twists and braid outs are quite the fun and playful styles that we won’t tire of seeing this upcoming year.

protective styleProtective styles- We are going to see more women rocking the buns in 2010 as well. Protective styles in general have become more popularized due to the overwhelming amount of black ladies that are taking their hair care more seriously. That will cover a vast amount of styles such as roller sets, and the twist outs that were aforementioned.

rhiannaShort hair cuts- Short cuts and partial shaved heads are taking the upcoming spotlight in the New Year. The jagged or retro look is what’s hot for celebrity trendsetters like Rhiana and Nia Long. They even spice these styles up with brightly colored streaks mimicking the eighties trends. We could’ve predicted the return of this trend long ago. Of course those that favor short hair will jump on this bandwagon without hesitation, while people that prefer some length will stick to their long tresses.

I think it’s safe to say that there will be an abundance of versatility for women of color in the New Year.  We have come to embrace our abilities to wear our hair in a wide variety of free styles, yet represent sophistication in all its elegance, when necessary. The year 2010 will allow black women heightened self awareness, and we will continue to epitomize beauty and confidence.
